Effingham Captures Class 3A Girls Basketball Regional

Effingham High School claimed the Troy Triad Regional championshp.

TROY -- Effingham High School claimed the championship of the Class 3A Troy Triad Girls Basketball Regional Thursday evening in a game heard on KJ Country 102.3.

The Hearts won over host Triad, 50-38.

EHS edged out to a 9-7 opening quarter lead as Bella Austin put in two baskets while Sidney Donaldson hit a basket and a free throw and Alyssa Martin two free throws.

The Hearts moved into a 17-12 halftime lead. Austin hit four of four from the free throw line while Martin was two of two. Donaldson scored on another basket.

Coach Jeff Schafer's team then went on a 16-11 third quarter run. Donaldson cut loose with three baskets while Martin added a basket and was four of four at the free throw line. Averie Wolf put in two free throws and Austin a basket.

In the final period, the Hearts continued on with a 17-15 run. Donaldson hit two more baskets and was two of two at the line. Austin connected on four of four at the line and Wolfe hit three of four.

Donaldson led the way in scoring with seven baskets and three of three at the line for 17 points. Also in double figures was Austin with 14 and Martin with 10.

The Hearts hit 14 field goals, none from three-point range in eight attempts. What carried EHS was hitting 22 of 28 free throws.

The Hearts improved to 24-7 on the season and will now face either Carbondale or Mount Vernon in the first game of the Bethalto Civic Memorial Sectional Tuesday. Carbondale and Mount Vernon will meet for the Mount Vernon Regional championship Saturday at 6 p.m.
