St. Anthony Edges Altamont, Highland Downs Effingham

ALTAMONT -- It was a hard-fought battle before Effingham St. Anthony pulled out a 45-38 National Trail Conference victory over Altamont in Tuesday evening action in a game heard on 979XFM.

St. Anthony edged out to a 13-12 opening quarter lead behind three-pointers from Miles Waldhoff, Keenan Griffith and Brock Fearday.

Altamont stayed close with an eight-point run by Kade Milleville on one regular basket and two three-pointers. and four points from Cooper McManaway.

McManaway and Milleville continued on with six points each in the second quarter to lead 24-20 at halftime. Milleville and McManaway put in a regular basket, free throw and a three-pointer apiece.

Will Fearday connected on a three-pointer for the Bulldogs.

Neither team was hitting well as Altamont connected on 38.1 percent from the field while the Bulldogs hit a meager 29.6 percent from the field.

St. Anthony came back with a slight 10-8 edge in the third quarter as B. Fearday scored five and Ryan Schmidt four. 

Altamont was led by McManaway with four points in the third period and Altamont still held a lead, 32-30.

But the Bulldogs finally got unwound as Schmidt connected on a two-pointer, three-pointer and was three of four at the line for eight points as the Bulldogs had a 15-6 final quarter run for the victory.

Altamont could muster ony six points in the final quarter as Ben Roedl scored five of those points on two baskets and a free throw.

Both teams struggled from the field in the contest. St. Anthony hit 33.3 percent from the field while Altamont hit 30.4 percent.

The Bulldogs were led by Schmidt with 14 points on five field goals and three of four at the line. B. Fearday chipped in with 11.

Altamont was led by Milleville with 16 points on six field goals, half of those from beyond the arc, and one of one at the line. McManaway added 14 points.

The Indians hit 54.5 percent from the free throw line and St.Anthony was 53.8 percent.

In the junior varsity contest, St. Anthony was a 53-43 winner. Miles Waldhoff scored 20 while Will Bierman added 17.

Altamont was led by Brayden Elam with eight and Blake Berg and Jacob Johnson added seven each.

St. Anthony will travel to Robinson Friday for a final regular season contest before heading to the Class 1A Mowequa Central A&M Regional as the top seed to take on 16th-seeded Ramsey Monday at 6 p.m. Also entered in the Central A&M Regional are Windsor/Stewardson-Strasburg, Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City, Nokomis, Arcola, Bethany Okaw Valley and host Moweaqua Central A&M.

At Highland

Highland tore out to a 17-8 opening quarter lead and went on to hand Effingham a 62-36 loss Tuesday evening.

Five players scored for Highland as the Hearts were led by Jake Niebrugge with four points.

Highland then had a 21-9 second period to lead 38-17 at halftime. EHS got three-pointers from Jenner Pals and Jude Traub while Ian Kinkelaar hit a field goal and a free throw, also for three points.

The Bulldogs then had a slight 24-19 second half.

Cannon Bockhorn scored all eight of his points for the Hearts in the final quarter on two baskets and four of five at the line. He led the way for EHS.

Highland was led by Carter Holthaus and Garrin Stone with 15 each and Will Jansen with 13.

The Hearts will travel to Mount Zion Thursday for their final regular season contest before hosting a Class 3A regional with Charleston, Centralia, Herrin and Mattoon beginning Monday.
