EHS Wins 3A Regional Opener, St. Anthony, Altamont Advance

TROY -- Effingham High School opened its stay at the Class 3A Troy Triad Girls Basketball Regional with a 47-32 win over Centralia Monday evening.

The opening quarter was low scoring as the Hearts edged out to a 9-6 lead. Bria Beals hit a three-pointer while three other players connected on a basket each.

Sidney Donaldson connected on a three-pointer and two free throws while Averie Wolfe hit from beyond the arc but Centralia moved ahead 20-19 at halftime.

In the second half, EHS took off with a 14-5 third quarter and finished with a 14-7 final run.

Wolfe scored six points in the third quarter while Alyssa Martin put in two baskets.

Martin then took over in the final quarter with a basket and was five of six at the line for seven points and EHS finished with the victory.

Martin and Wolfe scored 13 points each. Martin hit four baskets and five of seven at the line while Wolfe connected on five baskets, two from three-point range, and was one of one at the line.

Also in double figures was Donaldson with 10.

The Hearts are now 23-7 on the season.

Troy Triad won the opening game of the evening at the regional with a 52-37 victory over Salem.

Effingham and Troy Triad will meet Thursday at 6:30 p.m. for the regional championshp and a trip to the Bethalto Civic Memorial Sectional Feb. 25.

At Neoga

Effingham St. Anthony opened its stay at the Class 1A Neoga Regional by pounding the host squad 67-35 Monday evening.

The Bulldogs ripped out to a 23-10 opening quarter lead as Adysen Rios connected on five regular baskets and a three-pointer for 13 points.

The scoring calmed down in the second period as St. Anthony had an 8-7 edge to lead 31-17 at halftime.

Nancy Ruholl put in three baskets and was three of three at the line in the third quarter for nine of her team's 15 points. St. Anthony led 46-29 going into the final quarter.

Ava Faber hit two three-pointers in the final quarter 21-6 run to finish out strong. Rios added six points on three baskets.

Rios finished with 25 points to lead the Bulldogs. She connected on 11 field goals, one a three-pointer, and was two of two at the line. Ruholl contributed 19 on seven field goals and five of seven at the line.

Rios had six rebounds, four assists and five steals. Ruholl had eight rebounds, six assists and two steals. Addi Nuxoll added 10 boards and Addi Lauritzen seven.

The Bulldogs finished hitting 12 of 15 free throws while Neoga was 12 of 16.

The Indians were led by Atalie Osborn with 19 points on six field goals and seven of eight at the line. Neoga ended the season with a 13-19 record.

In the second contest, Altamont, seeded fourth, edged fifth-seeded Dieterich, 57-54 in overtime.

Altamont edged out to a 19-12 opening quarter lead as Kaylee Lurkins connected for seven points on three baskets and a free throw while Kylie Osteen hit two three-pointers for six. Reagan Kuenstler added a three-pointer.

But Dieterich came back with a 9-5 second quarter to pull within 24-21 at halftime. Addison Miller scored seven of the nine points on a regular basket, a three-pointer and two of two at the line.

The Maroons continued on in the third with a 16-11 run to lead 37-35 going into the final period. Kady Tegeler scored six of her team's points.

Lurkins kept the Indians close with seven points in that third quarter and Nelson hit another three-pointer.

The Indians came back with a 12-10 fourth quarter. Nelson hit her third three-pointer while Lurkins put in four. Tegeler hit for six points while Callie Faller put in two baskets and the score was tied at 47-47 sending the game into overtime.

In the overtime period, Altamont had a 10-7 run as Reagan Kuenstler put in six of six from the line while Osteen hit a three-pointer and a free throw for the 10-7 run and the win.

Three players scored in double figures for Altamont. Lurkins finished with 18 on seven field goals and four of four at the line. Osteen added 13 and Kuenstler 10. Nelson was on the verge of double figures with nine on three trifectas.

Dieterich was led by Tegeler with 16 on eight field goals and Miller with 11.
