St. Anthony, Teutopolis Advance To Junior High State Title Games

Effingham St. Anthony and Teutopolis will be playing for junior high boys basketball State Tournament championships after both eighth-grade teams picked up two victories each in their respective classes Saturday.

 

Class 8-2A State Tournament

St. Anthony opened its stay at the Class 8-2A State Tournament with a 41-28 win over Burr Ridge Middle School.

The Bullpups ran out to an 11-4 opening quarter lead and led 23-10 at halftime. Burr Ridge came back with a slight 10-7 third quarter but St. Anthony finished strong.

Blake Verdeyen connected on seven field goals and was 10 of 10 at the line for 24 points to lead St. Anthony.

Jordan Harris led Burr Ridge with nine.

In other opening round games, Camp Point Central beat Winchester 48-33, Green Valley Midwest Central won over Milford 43-15 and Oglesby Washington defeated Peoria Heights 47-18.

In the second round, St. Anthony edged Olgesby Washington 28-27.

The Bullpups moved into an 8-2 opening quarter lead. But Oglesby Washintton came back with an 18-12 second quarter to tie the score at 20-20 at halftime.

Both teams then scored two points in the third quarter before St. Anthony had a 6-5 edge in the final period for the victory.

The Bullpups had even scoring as Curtis TIngley tallied nine, Blake Verdeyen and Sebastian Looman added eight each.

In the other contest, Camp Point Central won over Green Valley Midwest Central, 43-38.

St. Anthony (25-3) will face Camp Point Central (23-3) at 7:30 p.m. Thursday for the championship. The third place contest at 6 will feature Green Valley Midwest Central against Oglesby Washington.

Class 8-3A State Tournament

Teutopolis advanced to the championship game of the 8-3A State Tournament with two victories Saturday at Tolono Unity High School.

The Wooden Shoes won the opener over La Grange Highlands, 42-25. T-town tore out to an 18-4 opening quarter lead and never looked back.

Sam Probst led in scoring with 27 points on 10 field goals, three of those from beyond the arc, and four of 11 at the line. Blake Niemerg was next in scoring with five.

In other first round games, Calumet City Schrum defeated Williamsville 47-35, East St. Louis Lincoln downed Bradley Central 55-35 and Germantown Hill won over Downs Tri-Valley 40-34.

T-town then edged Germantown Hills 48-44 in overtime.

Germantown Hills edged out to a 13-11 opening quarter lead but T-town came back to move ahead 21-19 at halftime.

The Shoes then had a 9-7 third quarter to lead 30-26 going into the final period.

Germantown Hills came back with a 17-13 final period to knot the score at 43-43 sending the contest into overtime.

In the overtime period, the Shoes had a 5-1 run for the four-point victory.

Three players hit double figures for the Shoes. Niemerg led the way with 15 points on three field goals and nine of 14 at the line. Kale Goeckner contriburted 14 on four three-pointers and two of three at the line. Probst added 11.

In the other contest, East St. Louis Lincoln won over Calumet City Schrum 67-58.

T-town and East St. Louis Lincoln will meet at 7:30 p.m Thursday for the state championship. Calumet City Schrum and Germantown Hills square off at 6 for third place.

T-town stands at 23-6 on the season. ESL Lincoln is 22-3.

Class 8-1A State Tournament

Sigel St. Michael fell in opening round play of the 8-1A State Tournament at Warrensburg-Latham Middle School Saturday.

Augusta Southeastern came out a 39-36 winner.

The two teams were tied at 12-12 in the opening quarter. St. Michael moved ahead 24-23 at haltime and held a 33-28 going into the final quarter.

But Augusta Southeastern mounted a furiouis comeback, outscoring St. Michael 11-3 in the final quarter to claim the victory.

Trenton Ballinger led the Sharpshooters with 13 points on five field goals, two from three-point range, and one of two at the line. Adyn Heuerman chipped in with 10.

Augusta Southeastern was led by Nolan Stephens with 17 and Hudson Ramsey with 14.

In other first round games, Cambridge edged St. Anne 45-43, Peoria St. Jude won over Danville Schlarman 39-25 and Lincoln West Lincoln-Broadwell defeated Ransom 47-36.

In the semifinals, Peoria St. Jude downed Cambridge 25-12 and Lincoln West Lincoln-Broadwell defeated Augusta Southeastern 45-27.

Peoria St. Jude and Lincoln West Lincoln-Broadwell will meet at 7:30 p.m Thursday for the State championship while Cambridge and Augusta Southeastern square off for third place at 6.
