St. Anthony Wins NTC Boys Basketball Title, Dieterich Second

Effingham St. Anthony won the champoinship of the National Trail Conference Tournament.
ALTAMONT -- Effingham St. Anthony edged Dieterich 43-39 to win the championship of the 89th National Trail Conference Boys Basketball Tournament Saturday.
Dieterich edged out to a 10-7 opening quarter lead as Landen Keck hit a three-pointer and a regular basket for five while Brock Niemerg nailed two baskets.
Ryan Schmidt scored all seven of St. Anthony's points on a three-pointer and four of four at the line.
The Maroons pushed into a 24-12 halftime lead. Bryce Bohnhoff and Lucas Westendorf got into the scoring with six points each.
The Bulldogs had only a three-pointer by Keenan Griffith and a regular basket by Schmidt.
But St. Anthony came out a different team in the second half. The Bulldogs had an 18-6 run in the third quarter to tie the score at 30-30. Brock Fearday, who didn't score in the first half, went on a tear with eight points on three baskets and a free throw while Schmidt scored six.
the Bulldogs continued on with a 13-9 final quarter to pull out the 43-39 victory.
Schmidt hit six field goals, one a three-pointer, and was four of four at the line for 17 points while B. Fearday chipped in with 14.
Dieterich as led by Westendorf with 12 on five field goals and two of two at the line. Bohnhoff added 10.
In the third place game, Altamont outlasted North Clay, 69-60.
The Indians took an 18-14 opening quarter lead as Kade Milleville hit seven points and Cooper McManaway and Ben Roedl with five each.
North Clay's Mason Byers scored five points.
The lead went to 30-23 at halftime. Roedl added on two more baskets while McManaway and Parker Bell hit a three-pointer each.
The Indians then looked like they had put the game totally away with a 29-13 third quarter but had to hold off North Clay in the final quarter as the Cardinals had a 24-10 run.
Three players finished in double figures for Altamont. McManaway led the way with 19 points on seven field goals, three from beyond the arc and two of three at the line. Milleville added 18 and Roedl 15.
North Clay was led by Cody Zimdars with 23 points on 10 field goals, and three of three at the line. He scored 12 in the final quarter run. Walden tallied 11 while Lucas Griffy and Byers scored nine each.
South Central won the consolation championship by edging Windsor/Stewardson-Strasburg, 51-50.
The Hatchets moved ahead 10-9 in the opening quarter but South Central took a 23-22 halftime lead as Westin Neilson scored eight points on two three-pointers and a regular basket while Callaway Smith knocked in a three-pointer.
Jackson Gurgel helped the Hatchets keep within striking distance by scoring seven points in the second quarter.
Gurgel continued on with six points in the quarter for WSS while Seth Bergmann took over for the Cougars, scoring seven as the two teams played to an 11-11 tie.
In the final period, Altamont came roaring back with a 23-17 run to pull out the one-point victory. Aiden Sayers, who scored three points in the opening quarter, hit two baskets and three of four at the line for seven points while Seth Rincker scored four points after not scoring in the first three quarters.
Smith was the catalyst for the Cougars scoring eight points.
Gurgel tallied 16 points on four field goals, one a three-pointer, and seven of nine at the line. Brody Bible added 13 and Sayers 10.
South Central was led by Bergmann with 16 on six field goals and four of five at the line. Smith added 11 and Neilson nine.
In Friday's games, South Central was a 59-28 winner over St. Elmo/Brownstown.
The Cougars raced out to a 17-6 opening quarter lead and led 31-15 at halftime. Brody Markley connected on four field goals and three of four at the line in the half for 11 points while Westin Neilson hit a basket and two three-pointers along with a free throw for nine. Callaway Smith added seven.
SEB had only two baskets in that opening quarter, both three-pointers from Graidon Wilhour and Benji Lowe.
The Cougars dominated in the second half with a 28-13 run. Neilson added on seven more points in the third quarter.
Neilson finished with 16 on six field goals, half from three-point range, and one of two at the line. Markley added 13 points while Smith finished with 10.
St. Elmo/Brownstown was led by Wilhour as the lone player in double figures with 11 on four field goals, three from beyond the arc.
In the second game Saturday, Dieterich downed Altamont, 50-32.
The Maroons' Lucas Westendorf connected on three baskets in the opening quarter as Dieterich moved ahead 8-2.
Altamont came back with a 13-11 second period to pull within 19-15.
But Dieterich went on a 31-17 second half run. Brock Niemerg hit 11 of the final quarter 16 points. He finished with 19 on seven field goals, three from beyond the arc, and two of two at the line. Westendorf also finished in double figures with 10.
Altamont was led by Kade Milleville with eight on three field goals, two of those three-pointers.
In the seventh-place contest, St. Elmo/Brownstown claimed a 52-39 victory over Neoga.
The Eagles edged out to a 10-5 opening quarter lead as Vadim Plum connected on two three-pointers.
The lead went to 23-11 at halftime as points were scattered among five players with Trenten Monnet scoring four.
Neoga came back with a 15-13 third quarter run to pull within 10. Luke Keller hit for five points and Carter Young and Landon Titus had four each.
But St. Elmo/Brownstown finished with a 16-13 final quarter as L. Wilhour hit six points on three regular baskets and Benji Lowe connected on two three-pointers.
SEB was led by L. Wilhour with 13 on six field goals and one of two at the line. Lowe added 10.
Neoga was led by Young with five field goals, one a three-pointer, for 11. Keller added nine.
Members of the All-Tournament Team were, left to right, Cody Zimdars, Brock Fearday, Mason Byers, Ben Roedl, Jackson Gurgel, Graidon Wilhour, Lucas Westendorf, Kade Milleville, Brock Niemerg, Landon Keck and Ryan Schidt. Not present was Westin Neilson.
Named to the All-Tournament Team were Westin Nielson (South Central), Ben Roedl (Altamont), Graidon Wilhour (St. Elmo/Brownstown), Jackson Gurgel (Windsor/Stewardson-Strasburg), Mason Byers (North Clay), Lucas Westendorf (Dieterich), Kade Milleville (Altamont), Cody Zimdars (North Clay), Brock Fearday (St. Anthony), Brock Niemerg (Dieterich), Landon Keck (Dieterich) and Ryan Schmidt (St. Anthony) who was named Most Valuable Player.
Winning the first-ever Cheer Competition was St. Anthony.
