Shoes Take Third At Salem Tourney, LIC, LPC Tourney Results

SALEM -- Teutopolis High School captured third place at the 73rd Salem Boys Basketball Invitational during weekend action.

The Wooden Shoes fell to Mount Vernon Friday evening by a 53-43 count. That dropped T-town into the third place contest against Champaign Central. Central had fallen to Centralia 56-54.

In the game against Mount Vernon, the Rams held a 27-20 haltime lead and led by that same seven-point count after the third quarter. In the final period, the Rams had a 13-10 run.

T-town had one player in double figures. Alex Kremer led the way with 17 points on six field goals and five of five at the line.

Teutopolis then squared off against Champaign Central in the third place contest and went overtime before pulling out a 54-51 victory.

The two teams played to a 13-13 opening quarter tie before T-town edged ahead 26-25 at halftime. The Shoes still held a one-point lead in the third quarter, 41-40.

Central came back with a 9-8 final period to tie the score at 49-49 sending the contest into the overtime period where the Shoes had a 5-2 count for the win.

Drew Hoene led the way with 18 points on seven field goals, two from three-point range, and two of two at the line. Also in double figures was Kremer with 12.

Effingham also competed in the Salem Tournament. The Hearts played two games Saturday. EHS fell to Carbondale, 52-42 in consolation bracket play.

The Hearts moved into a 16-13 opening quarter lead but trailed 28-27 at halftime. Carbondale then moved ahead with an 11-9 third quarter and finished strong with a 22-12 run.

Effingham was led by Jenner Pals with  21 points on seven field goals, five from three-point range, and two of two at the line.

The Hearts dropped into the seventh place contest. Charleston claimed a 52-42 victory.

The score was tied at 7-7 after the opening quarter. Charleston then took off with a 19-9 second period run to lead 26-16 at halftime.

EHS came back with a 20-12 third quarter as Pals hit three trifectas for nine points and Jacob Warner scored seven. EHS had pulled within 38-36.

But the Trojans got back on track with a 14-6 final quarter for the win.

EHS was led by Pals with 15 points on five three-pointers. Max Flack added nine.

Centralia won the championship over Mount Vernon, 44-32. Carbondale claimed the consolation championship, 51-29 over Salem.

At Lawrenceville

Newton fell in its opener to Casey-Westfield at the Little Illini Conference Tournament Saturday.

The Eagles ran out to a 17-5 opening quarter lead on Casey-Westfield then pushed it to 27-14 at halftime.

But, the Warriors came back with a 24-15 third quarter and finished out with a 20-11 final period to capture the victory.

Parcell led Casey-Westfield with 28 points on nine field goals and 10 of 15 at the line.

Newton was led by Kody Bergbower with 22 points on seven field goals, two of those three pointers, and six of seven at the line. Hayden Mulvey chipped in with 19.

Quincy Fulton led the Eagles in rebounds with seven.

In other games Saturday, Richland County won over Robinson, 78-42, Paris edged Marshall 50-49 and Lawrenceville downed Mount Carmel, 70-54.

Newton will now meet Mount Carmel at 7:30 p.m. today in consolation bracket. In the other consy bracket contest today, Robinson takes on Marshall at 6.

Tuesday's games feature Richland County against Paris at 6 and Lawrenceville and Casey-Westfield squaring off at 7:30 in winner bracket action.

At Toledo

Cumberland handed Arthur-Lovington/Atwood-Hammond a 46-41 loss in opening round play of the Lincoln Prairie Conference Tournament Saturday.

The Pirates moved into a 10-6 opening quarter lead as Cameron Roedl scored five points. The lead went to 23-14 at halftime. Roedl hit a three-pointer and a free throw for four while Reed Miller connected on a trifecta. The Pirates held a 23-14 hafltime lead.

ALAH came back with a 16-11 third quarter run to pull within 34-30 going into the final quarter.

But Cumberland came back with a 12-11 edge for the victory. Roedl put in five free throws and a basket in that final quarter run.

Roedl finished with 16 points on four field goals, one a three-pointer, and seven of 11 at the line. Zack Harmon added nine points.

In other first round games, Okaw Valley won over Cerro Gordo-Bement 63-47, Tri-County downed Sullivan 47-43 and Unity Christian was a 47-45 winner over Arcola.

In Friday games, Cerro Gordo/Bement downed Blue Ridge 66-56, Tri-County beat Argenta-Oreana 61-49, Unity Christian won over Villa Grove 88-47 and ALAH beat Heritage 51-44.

Cumberland will now face Unity Christian Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. Okaw Valley and Tri-County meet at 5 in the first game of the evening. Cerro Gordo/Bement faces Sullivan at 8.
