EHS Girls To Play For Vandalia Title, St. A vs. BSE In NTC Tourney Championship

VANDALIA -- Effingham High School moved into the championship game of the Vandalia High School Girls Basketball Tournament with a victory Thursday evening.

The Hearts won over host Salem by a 51-33 tally. EHS took a 10-5 opening quarter lead as five players scored, six points coming from the free throw line.

In the second period, the Hearts went on a 17-7 run to lead 27-12 at halftime. Averie Wolfe tallied a three-pointer and regular basket for five while Sidney Donaldson scored on two baskets for four. Three other players hit net in the quarter.

The Hearts continued on with a 24-21 second half. Six players scored in this quarter.

Only one player scored in double figures but nine tallied points in the contest. Alyssa Martin scored two baskets and was seven of nine at the line for 11.

Wolfe and Donaldson tallied eight each while Bria Beals and Bella Austin added seven each.

Coach Jeff Schafer's team improved to 17-5 on the season.

In the other contest, Vandalia edged Greenville 75-70.

Saturday's finals include Effingham against Hillsboro at 2:30 p.m. for the championship. Salem and Wesclin meet at 1 p.m. for third place.

In the morning session, Mascoutah and Greenville square off for seventh place while Vandalia meets Mattoon at 11:30 for fifth.

At Beecher City

Effingham St. Anthony and Brownstown/St. Elmo will meet for the championship of the National Trail Conference Tournament after both claimed victories Thursday evening.

The Bulldogs captured a 56-42 win over Windsor/Stewardson-Strasburg.

St. Anthony edged out to a 15-10 opening quarter lead. Adysen Rios scored five points while Addi Nuxoll chipped in with four and three other players scored.

Windsor/Stewardson-Strasburg was led by Claire Holland and Claire VonBehrens with four points each.

St. Anthony continued on with a 15-8 second period to lead 30-18 at halfitme. Nancy Ruholl scored six points and Rios added a three-pointer.

Samantha Hayes and Ellie Wittenberg scored four each for WSS.

Windsor/Stew-Stras came back within 13-12 in both the third and fourth quarters but couldn't overcome that 12-point St. Anthony halftime lead.

Ruholl went on a run, scoring seven points while Addi Nuxoll added six as St. Anthony had a 13-12 run.

Rios finished out with five final quarter points for St. Anthony.

Wittenberg tallied six for the Hatchets.

St. Anthony had three players in double figures. Nuxoll led the charge with 16 points, 14 rebounds, two blocks and a blocked shot. She hit eight field goals, five coming in the second half.

Also in double figures was Ruholl with 15 points. She pulled down eight rebounds, had three assists and three steals. Rios tallied 13 points, finished with four rebounds and three assists. Addie Lauritzen added six points and five rebounds. Lilly Gannaway had three assists and five steals.

Windsor/Stew-Stras was led by S. Hayes with 16 points on eight field goals. Wittenberg added 12 points.

"It was a good conference battle," said St. Anthony Coach Aaron Rios. "Windsor/Stew-Stras has a good discipled ball club. It would be great to sell out and break our record attendance from last year for Saturday night's championship game.""

The Bulldogs advanced to the title contest with a 17-4 record and they stand at 5-0 in the National Trail Conference. They are appearing in the championship game for the third year in a row.

In the second game of the evening, Brownstown/St. Elmo was a 52-47 winner over Altamont.

The Bombers moved ahead 16-10 in the opening quarter and held a 28-18 halftime lead. Altamont came back with a 16-11 third quarter run to pull within 39-34 going into the final period. But it was a 13-13 final quarter.

Dayana Haslett led the way for BSE with 10 field goals, two of those three-pointers, and three of six at the line for 25. Danika Ramsey added nine and Madi Miller eight.

Altamont was led by three players in double figures. Kaylee Lurkins hit four field goals and was five of six at the line for 13 while Reagan Kuenstler and Kylie Osteen added 10 each.

Brownstown/St. Elmo moved into the championship game Saturday at 7:30 p.m. against St. Anthony.

Windsor/Stew-Stras and Altamont will meet for third place at 2:30.

Dieterich will face Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City Saturday at 1 p.m. for the consolation championship. North Clay and Neoga square off for seventh place at 11:30 a.m.
