Shoes Win Opener At Salem Invite, Altamont, C'land Claim Victories In High School Boys Games

The Indians edged out to a 14-11 opening quarter lead as Cooper McManaway connected on an old-fashioned three-point play with a field goal and free throw and a three-pointer for six of those points. Zaine Miller hit a three-pointer and was two of two at the line for five. Kade Milleville contributed a three-pointer.
Dieterich remained close as Brock Niemerg scored on a three-pointer and was two of two at the line for five.
Altamont then pushed into a 26-19 halftime lead. Milleville connected on another three-pointer and had five in the quarter while Parker Bell also put in a three-pointer.
Then came the third quarter surge by the Indians. Miller scored seven points while Bell hit another three-pointer and three more contributed a basket each. Altamont led 42-27.
But, here came Dieterich. Lucas Westendorf, who tallied six points in the first three quaters, went on a run. He hit six baskets and was two of three at the line for 14 of his team's points. Landen Keck also went on a run with six points. But the Maroons couldn't overcome that third quarter run by Altamont.
Three players finished in double digits for Altamont. Miller finished with six field goals, two from three-point range, and was five of eight at the line for 19. McManaway chipped in with 15 and Milleville added 14. The Indians finished with 45.4 percent from the field and were 52.1 percent from the free throw line.
Dieterich was led by Westendorf with nine field goals and two of three at the line for 20. Keck also finished in double figures with 12. The Maroons hit 31.1 percent from the field and were 81.8 percent at the line.
In the junior varsity contest, Altamont won 51-46. Jacob Johnson scored 14 and Parker Bell 12.
Dieterich was led by Bryce Bohnhoff with 22 and Andrew Hall with 10.

At Salem
Teutopolis High School opened its run at the 73rd Salem Boys Basketball Tournament with a 69-33 win over Charleston Thursday evening.
The Wooden Shoes left nothing in doubt by ripping out to a 23-10 opeinng quarter lead and led 40-15 at halftime.
Only one player hit double figures but 11 players scored in the contest for the Shoes.
Alex Kremer connected on six field goals, one a three-pointer, and was three of four at the ilne for 16 points. Mick Niebrugge, Brody Thoele and Drew Hoene finished with nine each.
The Shoes had nine three-pointrs in the contest led by B. Thoele with three of them and Henry Thompson with two.
Mount Vernon won the second contest of the evening over host Salem, 53-30.
T-town advances to face Mount Vernon at 7:30 p.m. today. In the other game tonight, Champaign Central faces Centralia at 6. The winners of these two games will square off for the championship Saturday at 7:30 p.m. The losers will play for third place at 6.
In other games Saturday in consolation bracket play, Effingham meets Carbondale at 11 a.m. followed by Charleston against Salem at 12:30. The winners will meet for the consolation championship at 4:30 while the losers will square off for seventh place at 3.

At Toledo
Cumberland edged Okaw Valley, 46-43 in Thursday evening action.
The Pirates ran out to a 13-7 opening quarter lead as Kaleb Bierman hit a regular basket and a three-pointer for five and Kelby Bierman chipped in with four.
Cumberland led 22-17 at halftime. Reed Miller knocked in two three-pointers and Chase Stewart connected from beyond the arc.
The Pirates continued on with a 12-10 third period to lead 34-27 then had to hold off Okaw Valley in the final quarter.
Only one player ended in double figures for Cumberland. Scoring only two points in the first half, Cameron Roedl came back with an eight point in thes third quarter and finished with 16 for the contest. He hit six baskets, three trifectas and was one of two at the line. Miller finished with nine.
