Dieterich, BSE, Altamont, WSS Capture NTC Girls Tournament Openers

Dieterich, Brownstown/St. Elmo, Altamont and Windsor/Stewardson-Strasburg advanced in opening round play of the National Trail Conference Girls Basketball Tournament Monday.

Dieterich claimed the first contest of the day over South Central, 56-34.

The Maroons took a 17-8 opening quarter lead and led 26-16 at halftime. Dieterich came out with a 20-12 third quarter run.

Brittney Niemerg had a big game for the Maroons. She hit 13 field goals that included one three-pointer for 27 points.

Also in double figures was Sammi Goebel with 14 on seven field goals.

South Central was led by Kaitlyn Swift and Baylee Brown with 10 points each. Swift connected on four field goals, two of those from three-point range, and Brown hit four field goals and was two of four at the line.

Brownstown/St. Elmo, continued its winning ways with a 66-52 victory over Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City.

BSE edged out to a 15-14 opening quarter lead and pushed that to 28-22 at hafltime. The Bombers came out with a 20-8 third quarter run to seal the victory.

Dayana Haslett scored 21 points on eight field goals, half of those from three-point range, and one of one at the line. Addie Sasse chipped in with 18 while Madi Miller added 16.

The Bobcats were led by Macee Rodman with 22 points on eight field goals, six of those from beyond the arc. Ellie Miller added 12 points.

In the third contest, Altamont claimed a 63-58 win over Neoga.

The Indians took a 29-2 halftime lead then had a 46-39 lead going into the final period. Neoga came back with a 19-17 final period run only to end up with the loss.

Four players hit double figures for the Indians. Avery Aldrich led with 17 points. She connected on eight field goals and was one of three at the line. 

Reagan Kuenstler and Kylie Osteen scored 13 points each while Kaylee Lurkins chipped in with 12.

Neoga was led by Brynn Richards with 27 points on 10 field goals, one from beyond the arc, and six of nine at the line. Audrey Kepp scored 12 points.

Windsor/Stewardson-Strasburg finished out the day with a 54-33 win over North Clay.

The Hatchets took the early lead and never looked back. WSS led 32-14 at halftime and had a 16-5 third quarter run.

Three players finished in double figure scoring for Windsor/Stew-Stras. Kendra Hayes and Ellie Wittenberg scored 13 each. Hayes hit four field goals, two of those three-pointers, and was three of four at the line. Wittenberg connected on four field goals, one from beyond the arc, and was four of four at the line.

Also in double figures was Samantha Hayes with 10 points.

North Clay was led by Matia Price with 17 points on seven field goals, two of those three-pointers, and was one of one at the line.

The tournament continues today with top-seeded Effingham St. Anthony meeting Dieterich at 6 p.m. and Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City against South Central at 7:30.
