Tornadoes Down Hearts In Boys Overtime Basketball Game

Taylorville outscored Effingham 11-1 in overtime to pull out a 67-57 high school boys basketball victory Thursday evening in a game heard on KJ Country 102.3.

The Hearts edged out to a 9-8 opening quarter lead as Jude Traub connected on a three-pointer and two-pointer for five while Max Flack added four.

EHS held a 24-20 halftime lead. Jenner Pals nailed a three-pointer while Nolan Fearday and KJ Kellams put in four points each.

The Hearts continued on with a 20-18 third quarter run to lead 44-38 going into the final period. Jake Niebrugge, who didn't scorein  the opening half, hit a three-pointer, two baskets and a free throw for eight in the quarter while Cole Phillips scored four and Traub hit another three-pointer.

But here came the Tornadoes. Drake Howard connected on three baskets and a free throw for seven in the final period. Brock Brown hit a three-pointer and two free throws and Baron Odam connected for four points.

The Hearts hit a halfcourt shot to tie the score, sending the game into overtime. Traub and Kellams both had a three-pointer each while Fearday scored four.

But, Taylorville took the momentum and outscored the Hearts 11-1 in the overtime period for the 10-point victory.

Howard finished with 21 to lead Taylorville on six field goals and eight of 10 at the line. Clark Durbin also finished in double digits with 13.

The Hearts were led by Traub with 13 points on five field goals, three from beyond the arc. Niebrugge and Kellams added 10 each.

The Tornadoes improved to 4-2 in the conference and 9-8 overall.

Effingham dropped to 2-3 in the conference, 6-12 overall.
