Taylorville Downs EHS, Dieterich, Newton Win In Girls H.S. Basketball

TAYLORVILLE -- Taylorville put together a big scoring opening quarter and came back with another big scoring quarter in the third period to down Effingham 55-41 in a girls high school basketball game heard on 979XFM Tuesday evening.

The Tornadoes had six players score in that 21-8 opening quarter run. Mazie Fleming knocked in four baskets for eight points while Addison Tarr had four and Grace Rogers three.

Meanwhile, the Hearts could connect on only two baskets and two free throws. Averie Wolf hit a three-pointer and Alyssa Martin had a basket and a free throw.

The Hearts came back with a 12-6 second period as Bria Beals found the range from beyond the arc, hitting three for nine points. EHS pulled within 27-20 at halftime.

But that third quarter went to the Tornadoes as they put together a 20-7 run to lead 47-27 heading into the final period.

Fleming again was the catalyst for the Tornadoes, connecting on three baskets and two free throws for eight while Baileigh Wernz scored six.

The Hearts finished with only seven points on a basket and free throw from Alyssa Martin, a bucket by Saige Althoff and two free throws for Averie Wolfe.

EHS mounted a final quarter run, with a 17-8 tally but couldn't overcome the two big scoring quarters by the Tornadoes.

EHS had two players in double figures. Martin connected on four field goals and four free throws for 12 points. Beals tallied 10.

Taylorville's Fleming led with 16 points on seven field goals and two free throws. Tarr ended with 10.

Effingham dropped to 5-1 in the Apollo Conference and 15-4 overall.

In the junior varsity contest, Effingham was a 43-31 winner to improve to 13-2.McKenzie Love and Drew Weis had 10 points each for the Hearts.

At Dieterich

Dieterich ran out to an early lead and never looked back in a 54-30 win over Oblong/Palestine/Hutsonville Tuesday evening.

The Maroons held a 13-6 first quarter lead and led 31-15 at halftime.

Brittney Niemerg led the Maroons with 17 points on seven field goals, one a three-pointer, and two of three at the line. She had a double-double on the night with 15 rebounds. Niemerg also finished with three assists, four steals and one blocked shot.

Adidson Miller also finished in double digits with 11. Kady Tegeler ended wth nine points had three assists and three steals.

Dieterich owned the boards with 35 rebounds while OPH finished with 20. The Maroons hit nine of 13 free throws for 69.2 percent.

At Lawrenceville

Newton stepped out to a 20-10 opening quarter lead and went on to bounce Lawrenceville by a 76-30 count Tuesday evening.

The Eagles had three players hit double figures. Camryn Martin connected on eight field goals and was four of four at the line for 20 points. Karasyn Martin tallied 15 on six field goals that included three from beyond the arc. Izzy Meinhart finished with 10.

Claire Probst led in rebounds with five. Allie Hermann had four assists. C. Martin tallied seven steals while K. Martin had six.

The Eagles improved to 12-4 (3-1) on the season. They will be back in action Thursday, traveling to Olney to take on Richland County.

In the junior varsity contest, Newton also won, 57-34.

Grace Schumacher led the way with 11 points while Alani Bergbower added 10. The Eagles improved to 6-3 (3-1) on the season.
