Newton Girls Second At Merry Mule Tourney, Altamont Fifth At Holidaze Hoopla, Neoga Sixth At Monticello

FAIRFIELD -- Newton High School finished second at the Merry Mule Girls Basketball Tournament Saturday.

The Eagles went up against Mount Carmel and fell in the championship game, 56-46.

Third place went o Edwards County over Woodlawn, 62-53 while fifth place was claimed by Fairfield over Flora, 50-16. 

The seventh place contest went to Webber Township over North Clay, 48-41. The ninth place game was claimed by Lawrenceville over Mount Carmel JV, 47-31. Wayne City downed Murphysboro 46-39 for 11th place.

Newton's Camryn Martin and Karasyn Martin were named to the All-Tournament team along with Madi Stevens (Mount Carmel), Maycee Randall (Mount Carmel) and Most Valuable Player Riley Hershey (Mount Carmel).

In pool play Saturday, Newton defeated Woodlawn 64-41 in the Gold Pool while Fairfield trounced Webber Township (Bluford), 57-13 in the Silver Pool and Lawrenceville beat Murphysboro 62-41 in the Bronze Pool.

 

At Robinson

Altamont competed in the Robinson Holidaze Hoopla at Robinson High School and finished fifth.

Altamont fell to Oswego 49-40 in Friday pool play and won over Shakamak, 63-35.

In Saturday action, Altamont competed for fifth place against Tri-County and won 39-29.

Most Valuable Players for the contest were Altamont's Kaylee Lurkins and Tri-County's Taylor Williams.

Third place went to Oswego over Robinson, 50-45. 

 

At Monticello

Neoga competed in the Monticello Holiday Tournament and finished sixth.

In Friday action, Gibson City-Melvin Sibley beat Neoga, 73-45.

GCMS took a 29-19 halftime lead and finished out with a 44-26 second half.

Neoga was led by Atalie Osborn with 25 points and Brynn Richards with 15.

Osborn hit 10 field goals and was four of five at the line. Richards put in three from beyond the arc.

Neoga then came back for the final game of the evening to down Paxton/Buckley-Loda 57-29.

Neoga held a 20-15 halftime lead then had a 24-13 third period and finished strong with a 13-1 final quarter.

Richards knocked in 12 field goals and was six of six at the line for 31 points.

Neoga and Tuscola then squared off for fifth place on Saturday.

Tuscola took the first quarter lead 23-10 and went on for a 51-44 victory.

Richards again led Neoga with 16 points on seven field goals and one of two at the line. Osborn also had 16 points on four field goals and seven of eight at the line.

Neoga is now 7-9 on the season and won't return to action until January 6 hosting Newton.

In other Friday games, Clinton beat Paxton/Buckley/Loda 57-21, Monticello won over Tuscola 57-53 and Tri-Valley downed Rdigeview 58.

In other Saturday games, Tri-Valley beat Gibson City-Melvin-Sibley 54-52 for the championship. Monticello downed Clinton 47-32 for third place. Ridgeview won over Paxton/Buckley/Loda 35-29 for seventh place.
