Bulldogs Down Shoes To Win EHS/T-town Christmas Classic

Effingham St. Anthony ran out to a 17-7 opening quarter lead and went on for a 60-49 victory over Teutopolis in the championship game of the Effingham/Teutopolis Christmas Classic Saturday.

The Bulldogs' Ryan Schmidt connected on a two-pointer, a three-pointer and was four of six at the line for nine points in the opening run. Keenan Griffith hit two baskets and Brock Fearday was four of four at the ilne.

The Wooden Shoes came back with a 12-9 second period to pull within 26-19 at halftime. Mick Niebrugge put in eight points and Brody Thoele two baskets.

But St. Anthony held strong with a 20-12 third quarter by hitting four three-pointers as Will Fearday connected on two from beyond the arc and Griffith and B. Fearday added one each and St. Anthony led 46-31.

Once again the Shoes came back with an 18-14 final quarter run. Drew Hoene guided the run with 11 points as he swished three from beyond the arc and hit a regular basket. But it was too little to overcome.

Schmidt held off that challenge by scoring 11 in the final quarter on three baskets and five of six at the line. With seven minutes left in the contest, Schmidt hit two free throws and registered his 1,000th career point.

Schmidt finished with 26 points on eight field goals, one a three-pointer, and nine of 12 at the line.

Also in double digits were B. Fearday with 14 and Griffith with 10.

Teutopolis also had three players in double figures. Niebrugge led the way with eight field goals and five of six at the line for 21. Hoene added 14 and Thoele finished with 10.

Effingham captured 11th place with a 63-58 win over Charleston.

The Hearts edged out to a 16-15 opening quarter lead and led 32-29 at halftime.

EHS continued on in the second half with a 14-13 third period edge and finished out with a 17-16 final quarter.

Two players finished in double figures for the Hearts. Nolan Fearday tallied 11 on five field goals, one a three-pointer. Jake Niebrugge chipped in with 10 and Jude Traub tallied nine. Cole Phillips led in rebounds with six.

Lawrenceville defeated Newton 51-31 for 13th place. Lawrenceville moved into a 14-6 opening quarter lead and led 27-14 at halftime. Lawrenceville continued on with a 24-17 second half.

Noah Wilson led the winners with 18 points.

Newton was led by Kody Bergbower with 16 points on five field goals and four free throws. He and Quincy Fulton pulled down six rebounds each.

In the third place game, Lincoln Way East won over Pleasant Plains 54-48.

The fifth place game went to Champaign Centennial over Tolono Unity 74-71. 

The consolation championship was won by Dixon over Lutheran North 55-47. 

The 15th place contest went to Oregon over Belvidere 57-47.

Named to the All-Tournament Team were Brock Fearday (St. Anthony), Ryan Schmidt (St. Anthony), Alex Kremer (Teutopolis), Mick Niebrugge (Teutopolis), Tyler Oakley (Charleston), Noah Wilson (Lawrenceville), Tre Hoggard (Tolono Unity), Coleton Lagendorf (Tolono Unity), Kayden Peat (Champaign Centennial), Sherrod Clark (Champaign Centennial), Darius Harrington (Dixon), Will Buchanan (Lincoln Way East), Brenden Sanders (Lincoln Way East) and Cooper Schlanneberg (Lincoln Way East).

In Friday games, Teutopolis beat Champaign Centennial 52-49 and Pleasant Plains 38-29. Effingham won over Oregon 57-45 and fell to Lutheran North 40-33. St. Anthony beat Chicago Brooks 57-38 and Lincoln Way East 65-54. Newton lost to Lutheran North 46-22.
