BSE Claims Two Wins, Dieterich, C'land Win One At Dieterich Girls Tournament, Altamont Drops Loss At Robinson

DIETERICH -- Brownstown/St. Elmo, tied for fifth in the 1A state basketball poll, claimed two victories in opening round play at the Dieterich Holiday Girls Basketball Tournament Thursday.

The Bombers tallied a 49-37 victory over Casey-Westfield in the second game of the day then beat South Central 62-30 in game five.

BSE's Dayana Haslett led the way in the contest against Casey-Westfield. Haslett scored 24 points on nine field goals, three from beyond the arc and three of five at the line.

The Bombers held a 29-12 halftime lead and held off a second half run by Casey-Westfield.

Presley Williams added eight for the winners.

BSE then came back with a 62-30 victory over South Central in game five.

The two teams were tied at 7-7 after the opening quarter but the Bombers ran off with a 30-6 second quarter and never looked back.

Haslett again led the way, this time with 30 points on 14 field goals, one a three-pointer and one of two at the line.

Also in double figures was Madi Miller with 12.

South  Central was led by Kaitlyn Swift and Baylee Brown with 12 each. Swift hit three trifectas and was three of three at the line. Brown hit two baskets, one a three-pointer, and was seven of 10 at the line.

In the opening contest, Dieterich pounded Oblong/Palestine/Hutsonville to the tune of 75-37.

OPH held a 16-14 opening quarter lead but Dieterich had a 21-10 second quarter run to lead 35-26 at halftime.

The Maroons then blew the game wide open with a 25-6 third quarter.

Four players hit double figures for the winners. Brittney Niemerg led the way with 10 field goals, one from three-point range, and four of six at the line for 25 points. Kady Tegeler chipped in with 16, Addison Miller added 15 and Sammi Goebel finished with 10.

Dieterich fell in the final game of the day against Marshall, 51-47.

Marshall edged out to a 13-12 opening quarter lead and led 26-23 at halftime. Dieterich came back with a 17-14 third quarter to tie the game at 40-40. But Marshall had an 11-7 final period for the victory.

Niemerg led the way again for the Maroons with 18 points on six field goals, two from three-point land, and four of six at the line. S. Goebel also finished again in double figures with 10.

Cumberland pounded Oblong/Paletine/Hutsonville, 66-26.

The Pirates ran out to a 20-5 opening quarter lead and led 34-18 at halftime. They had a 32-8 second half.

Jude Miller tallied 23 points on 10 field goals, two of those three-pointers, and one of one at the line. Also in double figures was Alyssa Dittamore with 18 points.

South Central fell against Arcola, 59-18 in game three of the tournament.

Arcola held a 27-6 halftime lead.

South Central was led by Lorelai Rose and Baylee Brown with five points each.

In today's tournament action, Casey-Westfield meets South Central at 10 a.m., Marshall takes on Oblong/Palestine/Hutsonville at 11:30, Arcola is against Casey-Westfield at 1 p.m., Cumberland faces Marshall at 2:30, Brownstown/St. Elmo takes on Arcola at 4 and Dieterich and Cumberland meet at 5:30 in the final game of the day.

At Robinson

Altamont is competing in the Robinson Holidaze Hoopla and fell in its opening round contest Thursday.

The Indians took on North Central and lost 49-30.

In other games, Robinson won over Tri-County 44-16, Staunton edged Sullivan 58-57 and Oswego won over Shakamak 64-23.

Altamont is back in action today against Oswego at 1:30 p.m. and the final game of the day vs. Shakamak at 7:30.
