Effingham St. Anthony High School had a big-scoring second half in downing Dieterich, 68-40 as two National Trail Conference boys basketball teams met Friday evening in a game heard on 979 XFM.

The Bulldogs edged out to a 10-6 opening quarter lead and led 26-19 at halftime.

But St. Anthony put the game away in the second half with a 42-21 run. Ryan Schmidt and Brock Fearday broke loose with big scoring in the third quarter. Schmidt hit two baskets and two free throws for six points while Fearday connected on three baskets, one a three-pointer, and two free throws for nine points in the 22-11 run.

Then in the final quarter, Fearday hit two more baskets and was four of four at the line for eight points while Schmidt added on six more points in a 20-10 final period run.

B. Fearday hit five field goals and was eight of nine at the line for 19 points to lead the Bulldogs. Three other players finished in double figures. Keenan Griffith led the way in the opening half with five regular baskets and a three-pointer for 13 of his 15 points. Schmidt added 14 points and Will Fearday 12.

The Bulldogs connected on 44.2 percent from the field and a whopping 85.7 percent from the free throw line, hitting 18 of 21.

St. Anthony finished with 34 rebounds led by Schmidt with 13. Sam Link had four assists.

Dieterich had one player in double figures. Bryce Bohnhoff led the waywith five field goals for 10 points. Lucas Westendorf led in rebounds with nine and had four assists.

The Movin' Maroons hit only 34 percent from the field but were 66.7 percent at the line.

In the junior varsity contest, Dieterich captured a 64-58 victory. The Maroons were led by Ezra Cook and Andrew Hall with 15 each and Bryce Bohnhoff with 14.

St. Anthony was led by Will Vonderheide with 13 and Will Bierman with 12.

In a freshman/sophomore contest, St. Anthony edged Dieterich, 39-35. Jonny Gannaway and Cooper Sehy scored 11 each for the Bulldogs.

Dieterich was led by B. Schottman with 19.

At Newton

Newton ran out to a 14-2 opening quarter lead and Robinson then had to fend off the Maroons for a 57-47 victory Friday evening.

Robinson came back with a 20-14 second quarter to pull within 28-22 at halftime. Newton then had a 29-25 second half.

Kody Bergbower led the way for Newton with 25 points on nine field goals and seven of nine at the line. Hayden Mulvey chipped in with 18 on six three-pointers, and Lance Volk added 10.

The Eagles also won the junior varsity contest, 41-33.

In a Saturday game, Newton downed Fairfield, 51-42.

Fairfield took a 15-12 opening quarter lead and led 30-19 at halftime.

But the Eagles came roaring back with a 21-10 third quarter to tie the score at 40-40 in the third quarter and then had an 11-2 final period to win.

Mulvey led the way again for the Eagles with 21 points on eight field goals, three of those three-pointers, and three of five at the line.

Bergbower added 19 points on seven field goals, one a three-pointer and four of four at the line.

Newton improved to 4-6 on the season with the two wins.

At Sullivan

Teutopolis competed in the Sullivan Shootout and fell to Pinckneyville, 53-38 Saturday.

The Wooden Shoes trailed Pinckneyville 9-8 after the opening quarter but came back to take a 22-19 halftime lead.

Pinckneyville then had a 16-4 third quarter and never looked back.

Alex Kremer was the lone Wooden Shoe player in double digits with 15 on six field goals, one a three-pointer, and two of three at the line for 15.

In other shootout games, Lawrenceville won over Arcola, 42-31; Robinson downed Sullivan 57-48 and Alton defeated Danville 66-53. In a girls contest, Sullivan claimed a win over St. Joseph-Ogden, 56-18.

At Charleston

Charleston claimed a 63-46 win over Effingham in Apollo Conference play Friday evening.

The Trojans took an 18-11 opening quarter lead as Tyler Oakley hit three trifectas and three regular baskets to score 15 of the team's 18 points. Andrew Kuykendall hit a three-pointer.

Effingham's KJ Kellams and Jude Traub hit a three-pointer each and Cole Phillips scored four points.

It was the same in the second quarter as Charleston had another 18-11 run to lead 36-22 at halftime.

Phillips continued on for the Hearts, scoring six second quarter points while Traub hit another three-pointer.

The Hearts had a 15-12 third quarter run. Hayden Wendling was two of two at the line and knocked in a three-pointer for five. Ethan Jones hit a three-pointer and Jake Niebrugge put in four points.

But Charleston came back with a 15-9 final quarter. Jones was five of six at the line for EHS.

Phillips was the lone player in double figures for EHS with six two-pointers for 12. Jones added eight.

Charleston was led by Oakley with eight field goals, four from three-point range, and one of one at the line for 21.

At Arcola

Arcola played host to Neoga and tallied a 57-29 victory in a non-conference matchup Friday.

The Purpleriders took a 13-9 opening quarter lead as Braden Phillips hit three baskets for six points and Tanner Thomas added five.

Neoga was led by Cayden Hakman with two three-pointers for six while Landon Titus hit from beyond the arc.

Arcola then took off with a 22-3 second quarter to lead 35-21 at halftime. The lone points for Neoga were two free throws by Gavin Ray.

Arcola then had a 22-17 second half.

Luke Keller led Neoga with eight points on four field goals.

Tuscola claimed a 60-41 non-conference victory over Altamont in Friday action.

Altamont dropped to 3-5 on the season and is back in action Thursday in the Sesser Valier Holiday Tournament against New Athens.

 

At Wayne City

Edwards County (Albion) won the championship of the 70th Conrad Allen Holiday Tournament.

Edwards County defeated North Clay 64-51 in the championship contest Saturday.

North Clay's Cody Zimdars, Mason Byers and Carder Walden were named to the All-Tournament Team.

Zimdars scored his 1,000th career point during the championship game.

Third place went to Webber Township over Wayne City 65-52. Grayvile won the fifth place contest, 79-55 over Crab Orchard. In the seventh place contest, Thompsonville downed Cisne 55-41. Sandoval finished ninth with a forfeit win over Lovejoy.

The Cardinals cheerleading squad claimed second place.

In Friday's action, North Clay defeated Wayne City 72-53, Crab Orchard edged Cisne 58-54 and Webber Township won on a forfeit over Lovejoy.
