Cumberland Wins St. Elmo Holiday Tourney Championship

Cumberland High School won the championship of the St. Elmo Holiday Basketball Tournament.
ST. ELMO -- Cumberland High School claimed the championship of the 64th Annual St. Elmo Holiday Boys Basketball Tournament Saturday.
The Pirates handed Windsor/Stewardson-Strasburg a 64-42 loss in the title contest.
Windsor/Stew-Stras edged out to a 10-9 opening quarter as Aidan Sayers and Jackson Gurgel connected on four points each.
But Cumberland came roaring back as Chase Stewart connected on four three-pointers for 12 points while Cameron Roedl hit a three-pointer and two of two at the line for five points. Cumberland finished with a 23-10 second period run to lead 32-20 at halftime.
Cumberland continued on with a 21-11 third period. Stewart added on five more points while Kade McMechan and Red Miller hit a three-pointer each and the Pirates held a 53-33 lead going into the final period
Stewart finished with 26 points on nine field goals, eight of those were three-pointers. Roedl added 11 on three field goals, one a three-pointer and four of four at the ilne. The Pirates hit 11 three-pointers with Stewart garnering eight of those.
The Pirates finished with nine of 12 free throws while Windsor/Stew-Stras could connect on only nine of 22 from the free throw line.
The Hatchets were led by Jackson Gurgel with 21 points on eight field goals, one a three-pointer, and four of seven at the line. Sayers and Rincker tallied nine each.
Hillsboro was a 63-50 winner over St. Elmo/Brownstown for third place.
The Eagles took a 14-9 opening quarter lead as Graiden Wilhour and Lowell Wilhour scored five points each. G. Wilhour hit a three-pointer and a regular basket while L. Wilhour hit two baskets and a free throw.
But Hillsboro came back with a 21-6 second period and had a 21-12 third quarter run to lead 51-32.
St. Elmo/Brownstown had an 18-12 final quarter but couldn't get over the third and second quarter runs by the Hiltoppers.
G. Wilhour finished with 17 points for SEB with six field goals, three of those three-pointers and two of two at the line. L. Wilhour added 15.
The consolation championship went to Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City over Mulberry Grove, 45-41.
The Bobcats edged out to a 7-6 opening quarter lead as Kaidyn Calame hit a three-pointer and Wyatt Rueff hit two baskets.
The lead went to 18-12 at halftime as five players contributed for the Bobcats.
Mulberry Grove pulled within 26-21 in the third quarter and had a 20-19 final period but the Bobcats held on.
Rueff hit two baskets and was five of six at the line for nine points while Hunter Pope hit a three-pointer.
CHBC was led by Rueff with six field goals and seven of eight at the line for 19 points.
The seventh place contest went to Patoka/Odin over Ramsey, 90-27.
In Friday's action, Mulberry Grove downed Patoka/Odin, 54-40.
In the second contest of the evening, Windsor/Stewardson-Strasburg edged St. Elmo/Brownstown, 46-43.
SEB held an 11-8 opening quarter lead but Windsor/Stew-Stras came back to move ahead 21-19 at halftime.
The two teams played to ta 12-12 third quarter and Windsor/Stew-Stras then had a 13-12 final period.
Jackson Grugel led the winners with 21 points on eight field goals, one a three-pointer, and four of seven at the line. Aidan Sayers and Rylan Rincker added one nine each.
St. Elmo/Brownstown was led by Lowell Wilhour with 15 and Graiden Wilhour with 11.
Named to the All-Tournament First Team were Jackson Gurgel (Windsor/Stewardson-Strasburg), Nathan Matoush (Hillsboro), Chase Stewart (Cumberland), Graidon Wilhour (St .Elmo/Brownstown) and Kelby Bierman (Cumberland). Gurgel was named the Most Valuable Player.
Second Team members were Wyatt Rueff (CHBC), Mark Mattson (Hillsboro), Zack Harmon (Cumberland), Lowell Wilhour (St. Elmo/Brownstown) and Jackson Icenogle (Mulberry Grove).
Defense Award went to Kelby Bierman (Cumberland).
Cheerleading awards went to St. Elmo/Brownstown first place and Mulberry Grove second place.
