The Effingham St. Anthony High School girls basketball team made school history Monday evening as the Bulldogs handed Teutopolis a 62-49 loss, beating the Wooden Shoes for the first time. The game was heard on KJ Country 102.3.

"It was an outstanding high school battle at the Enlow Center," said St. Anthony Coach Aaron Rios. "We had a balanced attack and it was a great team effort."

The Wooden Shoes struck early, taking a 13-6 opening quarter lead. Malea Helmink knocked in two baskets and two free throws for six points while Chloe Probst added four.

But the Bulldogs came back with an 18-4 second period to lead 24-17 at halftime. Nancy Ruholl nailed two three-pointers and a regular basket in the quarter for eight points while Ady Rios chipped in with three baskets for six and Lilly Gannaway added a free throw and a three-pointer.

T-town did not get a basket in the quarter and scored only four free throws by Kelsey Niemerg.

The Shoes came back strong in the third quarter but St. Anthony still had a slight 24-23 edge and held a 48-40 lead going into the final quarter.

Rios kept the Bulldogs on the upper end of the scoring in the third quarter. She hit two three-pointers and three regular baskets for 12 points. Addi Nuxoll chipped in with six points.

The Shoes were led by C. Probst with eight points while Helmink added seven in the third period.

The Bulldogs then put the contest away with a 14-9 final period as Ruholl and Addie Lauritzen added five points each.

Both teams now stand at 9-1 on the season.

Rios led the way with 20 points for the Bulldogs on nine field goals, two of those three-pointers. Also in double figures were Ruholl with 17 and Nuxoll with 10.

The Bulldogs finished hitting 52 percent from the field and 66.6 percent from the free throw line. They connected on six of 11 three-pointers for 54.5 percent.

Ruholl ended with eight rebounds and five assists. Rios had six rebounds, eight assists and three steals. 

Nuxoll finished with five rebounds and two blocked shots. Addi Lauritzen had seven points and led the team in rebounds with 10. Lilly Gannaway had four points, five assists and three steals.

T-town finished hitting 34 percent from the field, 62.5 percent from the three throw line and 33.3 percent from three-point range with two of six.

Teutopolis was led by Helmink with 16 on six field goals and four of five at the line. C. Probst tallied 14.

Helmink pulled down 10 rebounds while A. Probst had six. Kelsey Niemerg and Helmink had two blocked shots each.

"It was an awesome night at the Enlow Center," said St. Anthony Coach Aaron Rios. "We had a great atmosphere for high school basketball. We head over to Effingham Thursday night. Hopefully we'll see all of our fans there."

At Effingham

Effingham High School put this contest away quickly with a 23-5 opening quarter run and finished out with a 67-29 win over Charleston in Apollo Conference action Monday evening.

The Hearts had five players score in the opening quarter. Bella Austin connected for seven points while Bria Beals chipped in with five.

The Hearts lead stood at 40-16 at halftime. Sidney Donaldson and Averie Wolfe put in four points each in the second period while Austin added a three-pointer.

EHS kept the pressure on in the third quarter with a 20-6 run. This time around, it was Alyssa Martin who took over the scoring duties with eight points while Donaldson added six more to her total and Beals put in another three-pointer.

EHS emptied the bench in the final period as the two teams played to a 7-7 tally.

Five players hit double digits for the Hearts. Martin and Donaldson put in 12 each. Both players hit five field goals and were two of four at the line.

Also in double figures were Wolfe with 11, Beals with 10 and Austin with 10.

Effingham improved to 4-0 in the Apollo Conference and stands at 10-2 overall.

The Hearts claimed the junior varsity game, 53-10.

Drew Weis led EHS with 11 points while Malia Wendling added nine and McKenzie Love eight.

The Hearts return to action Thursday playing host to Effingham St. Anthony. The game can be heard on KJ Country 102.3.

At Altamont

Altamont played host to North Clay (Louisville) and picked up a 46-18 National Trail Conference victory Monday evening.

The Indians edged out to an 8-2 opening quarter lead. Kaylee Lurkins scored four of those points for Altamont.

The lead went to 20-8 at halftime. Lurkins added to her total with six points.

Matia Price hit a three-pointer by the Cardinals.

Altamont then pushed the score to 38-14 going into the final quarter with an 18-6 run. Lurkins scored seven. Kylie Osteen hit a three-pointer and had a free throw while Ella Nelson also connected on a three-pointer.

Osteen scored six of the eight final quarter points and finished with 12 for the Indians. Lurkins led the way with eight field goals and one of one at the line for 17.

North Clay was led by M. Price with seven points on three field goals, one a three-pointer.

In the junior varsity contest, Altamont was a 13-10 winner.

Justyce Higgs led Altamont with four points while Spike Pearcy hit a three-pointer.

North Clay was led by Phillips with three points.

At Newton

Newton stepped out to a 15-8 opening quarter lead and went on for a 52-31 victory over Salem in Monday evening action.

The Eagles led 27-18 at halftime.

Four players finished in double digits for Newton. Izzy Meinhart led the way with 12 points on five field goals, two of those three-pointers. Camryn Martin and Karasyn Martin finished with 11 each while Addy O'Dell chipped in with 10.

Claire Probst led the Eagles in rebounds with 10. Addy O'Dell led in assists with three. K. Martin finished with five steals.

Newton also won the junior varsity game, 44-30. Grace Schumacher led the way with 17 points while Alani Bergbower added 11. The Eagles are 4-2 on the season.

Coach Brad Harris' crew is now 7-2 in varsity action on the season. The Eagles return to play hosting Teutopolis Thursday.

Cumberland pounded Okaw Valley by an 87-11 count Monday evening.

The Pirates ran out to a 22-3 opening quarter lead and never looked back.

All five players scored in double figures for the Pirates. 

Jude Miller led the way with 27 points on 12 field goals, three of those from beyond the arc. Suzy Fritts added 19, Alysa Dittamore 17, Jade Carr 13 and Ava Long 11.
