EHS Wins During Festivities, Girls Basketball Weekend Roundup

Effingham High School celebrated 50 years of girls basketball Saturday with a 60-54 victory over Mahomet-Seymour.

The Hearts edged out to a 12-11 opening quarter lead as Alyssa Martin tallied five points and Tessa Raddatz hit a three-pointer.

The Hearts held a 22-20 halftime tally. Martin added four more points and Averie Wolfe connected on a three-pointer.

EHS then had a 19-10 third quarter run. Martin put in seven points while Raddatz and Wolfe hit a three-pointer each. Sidney Donaldson chipped in with four points. EHS led 41-29 lead going into the final period.

That's when Mahomet-Seymour went on a 25-19 run but couldn't get over the hump.

Reese Gallier scored 11 points, hitting three three-pointers and two of two at the line. Hannah Creel hit a three-pointer and two free throws. Hannah Martin and Courtney Forte hit a three-pointer each.

But the Hearts held on as Wolfe connected on seven free throws while Saige Althoff had a basket and two free throws and Donaldson two baskets.

Three players hit double figures for the Hearts. Martin connected on four field goals and two free throws for 16 points while Wolfe added 13 and Donaldson 10.

The Hearts improved to 3-0 in the Apollo Conference and 9-2 overall.

The junior varsity squad also claimed a victory, 49-28 to improve to 9-2. Melia Wendling led the way with 12 points while Maci Hayes added nine.

At Greenville

Greenville played host to Altamont and captured a 57-47 victory Saturday.

Greenville edged out to a 14-10 opening quarter lead and led 32-20 at halftime.

Walker led the winners with 20 points while Bearley added 11.

Altamont was led by Reagan Kuenstler with 13 on four field goals, two of those three-pointers, and three of six at the line. Kylie Osteen added 10 and Ella Nelson chipped in with nine.

The Indians claimed the junior varsity contest, 46-29. Justyce Higgs led the way with 11 points for Altamont.

At Toledo

In a Friday contest, Cumberland ripped out to a 20-0 opening quarter lead and never looked back in a 56-37 wn over Neoga.

The Pirates held a 31-14 halftime lead.

Three players hit double figures for the winners. Jude Miller connected on eight field goals and one of three at the line to lead the way with 21 points. She hit four three-pointers. Jade Carr added 13 and connected on three trifectas, and Suzy Fritts 12.

Cumberland hit nine three-pointers while Neoga had none. 

Neoga was led by Brynn Richards with 13 points on four field goals and five of five at the line. Atalie Osborn added 12 points.

The Indians dropped to 6-5 on the season and will play host to Brownstown/St. Elmo Thursday.
