EHS Wins In OT, St. A, T-town, Altamont, Dieterich, N. Clay Claim Boys Basketball Wins

Effingham High School went overtime before pulling out a 66-63 victory over Mattoon in boys basketball Tuesday evening in a game heard on 979XFM.

The Hearts trailed Mattoon 16-13 after the opening quarter and 34-28 at halftime. The Green Wave had a 14-12 third quarter to lead 48-40 going into the final period.

That's when EHS rallied with a 19-11 fourth quarter to knot the score at 59-59 sending the contest into overtime.

In that final quarter run, Jake Niebrugge, who guided the Hearts in the opening quarter with two three-pointers, came back to knock in two regular baskets and a three-pointer for seven while Cannon Bockhorn hit a three-pointer and Cole Phillips scored four points. Jude Traub hit a basket and a free throw while Ethan Jones and KJ Kellams contributed a free throw each and the Hearts tied the score at 59-59 sending the contest into overtime.

Niebrugge continued on in the overtime with a three-pointer and connected on two free throws while Phillips scored a basket and EHS pulled out a 66-63 win.

Niebrugge led four players in double figures. He connected on eight field goals, three of those trifectas, and was two of four at the line for 22 points.

Phillips tallied 12 points while Traub and Brady McDaniel finished with 11 each. The Hearts hit 11 three-pointers led by Niebrugge with four, McDaniel with three and Cannon Bockhorn and Traub had two each. EHS hit 50 percent from three-point range.

The Hearts improved to 2-0 in the Apollo Conference and are 3-5 overall. EHS will be back in action Friday playing host to Mahomet-Seymour with the junior varsity time scheduled for 5:30 p.m.

At Cowden

Effingham St. Anthony's Brock Fearday and Miles Waldhoff went on runs in the opening quarter as the Bulldogs went out to a 22-13 lead on Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City.

The Bulldogs then put together a 25-16 second half for the 59-41 victory.

Waldhoff connected on three from beyond the arc while Fearday hit three two-pointers and a three-pointer, also for nine points.

Ryan Schmdit and Will Fearday took over in the second quarter with four points each as both connected on a basket and two free throws.

Schmidt continued on with 10 of the Bulldogs 15 third quarter points and the lead stood at 49-33.

CHBC played the Bulldogs even in the second period as Kaidyn Calame and Blake Mueller scored four points each.

Calame finished with five in the third quarter.

Three players hit double figures for St. Anthony. Schmidt connected on five field goals, one from three-point range, and was six of eight at the line for 17 points. Waldhoff chipped in with six baskets, three from beyond the arc, for 15 points while B. Fearday added 10.

The Bobcats were led by Calame with 12 points on five field goals, two from three-point range. Wyatt Rueff added 10.

In the junior varsity contest, St. Anthony won 46-35.

Miles Waldhoff led the Bulldogs with 18 points.

CHBC was led by Griffin Vaughn with 12 and Remington Howell with eight.

In the freshman/sophomore contest, St. Anthony won 36-15.

The Bulldogs were led by Connor Storm with 10 points and Cooper Sehy with seven.

CHBC was led by Hayden Sarver with 11.

At Teutopolis

Teutopolis celebrated homecoming with a 55-39 victory over Paris Tuesday evening.

The Wooden Shoes took a 15-5 opening quarter lead and led 32-14 at halftime.

Drew Hoene scored 15 points to lead the Shoes on seven field goals and a free throw. Henry Thompson added 14 points on four three-pointers and two of two at the line.

Hoene led in rebounds with 11 and had three steals and three assists.

The Shoes finished with eight three-pointers in the game led by Thompson's four and two from Gavin Addis.

T-town improved to 5-1 on the season while Paris dropped to 4-3.

T-town was also a winner in junior varsity action, 89-21.

Davin Worman led T-town with 24 points while Jake Kocher added 12.

The Wooden Shoes are back in action Friday at Bloomington Central Catholic.

At Altamont

Altamont claimed a 59-44 victory over Newton in a non-conference matchup Tuesday evening.

The Indians took a 17-11 opening quarter lead as Ben Roedl hit three baskets for six points while Cooper McManaway and Kade Milleville connected on a three-pointer and a regular basket for five each.

Newton kept close with five points from Hayden Mulvey and six from Kody Bergbower.

Altamont then had a 14-9 third quarter as Milleville scored six more points and Roedl hit four of four from the free throw line.

Newton was led by Mulvey with eight more points.

Altamont's Milleville then connected at the free throw line in the final quarter, hitting eight of 12 as the Indians finished out with a 19-14 run.

Milleville hit four baskets, two of those three-pointers, and was nine of 14 at the line for 19 points to lead the Indians. McManaway and Roedl finished with 14 each.

The Indians improved to 3-1 on the season.

Newton was led by Mulvey with nine field goals, two from three-point range, and three of four at the line for 23 points. Bergbower added 14.

In junior varsity play, Newton edged Altamont, 55-54.

Hayden Mulvey led the Eagles with 16 points while Jacob Oldham added 12.

Altamont was led by Jacob Johnson with 20 and Cooper Pals with 10.

At Neoga

Dieterich came calling and picked up a National Trail Conference win over Neoga, 69-35 Tuesday evening.

The Movin' Maroons ran out to an 18-4 opening quarter lead and led 40-21 at halftime.

In that opening quarter run, Jaxon Funneman connected on four baskets for eight points while Lucas Westendorf hit a three and had an old-fashioned three-point play with a regular basket and a free throw for six

Westendorf added on seven points in the second period and Brock Niemerg also scored seven on a regular basket, a three-pointer and two of two at the line. Dieterich led 40-21.

Neoga's Luke Keller hit two three-pointers in the second quarter while Carter Young had five points.

Landen Keck took over the scoring duties for Dieterich in the third period with a three-pointer and six of eight from the free throw line for 15. Westendorf added on six more points.

Westendorf finished with seven field goals and two of three at the line for 19 points to lead Dieterich. Keck added 15 and Niemerg 11.

Neoga was led by Brayden Ray with 10 on four field goals and two free throws.

North Clay (Louisville) came calling and went home with a 70-52 win over St. Elmo/Brownstown as two National Trail Conference teams met Tuesday evening.

The Cardinals edged out to a 14-11 opening quarter lead and led 33-23 at halftime.

North Clay then had a 37-29 second half.

St. Elmo/Brownstown was led by Lowell Wilhour with 21 points on eight field goals, one a three-pointer, and four free throws. Graiden Wilhour added nine points and Vadim Plum eight. L. Wilhour led in rebounds with seven and steals with three. Plum pulled down six rebounds.

BSE dropped to 1-1 in the conference, 5-3 overall and is back in action Friday at St. Anthony.

There was no scoring for North Clay listed. The Cardinals improved to 1-1 in the conference, 4-2 overall.

North Clay won the junior varsity game, 63-55 and the freshman/sophomore contest, 36-29.

At Strasburg

Windsor/Stewardson-Strasburg fell victim to Arcola by a 63-49 tally Tuesday evening.

Arcola held a 16-8 opening quarter lead and led 28-21 at halftime. The Purple Riders then came back with a 35-28 second half run.

Windsor/Stew-Stras had two players in double figures. Rylan Rincker led the way with 13 points on five field goals and three of five at the line. Brody Bible added 12.

Arcola hit nine three-pointers while the Hatchets had one.

The Hatchets drop to 3-4 on the season.

Windsor/Stew-Stras claimed the junior varsity win, 43-34.

The Hatchets are back in action Friday hosting Shelbyville.

Vandalia came to South Central and picked up a 64-44 victory Tuesday evening.

The Vandals held a 16-6 opening quarter lead and led 33-15 at halftime and 48-27 going into the final quarter.

W. Brannon finished with 21 points for the Vandals while A. Casey added 14 and Q. Stombaugh 12.

South Central had two players in double digits. Seth Bergmann finished with 11 on four field goals, two from three-point range, and one of four at the line. Westin Neilson added 10.

Vandalia won the junior varsity contest while South Central claimed the freshman/sophomore game.

Casey-Westfield edged out to a 10-7 opening quarter lead and then pushed that to 26-10 at halftime.

The Warriors added on a 22-10 third quarter score.

Parcel led the winners with 17 points while Jones added 11.

Cumberland was led by Kelby Bierman with 11 on five field goals, one a three-pointer.
