Highland Beats EHS Girls, Tri-County Edges Neoga

HIGHLAND -- Effingham High School took the opening quarter lead but couldn't keep that it as Highland went on to down the Hearts 52-37 in girls basketball action Wednesday.

The Hearts held a 10-7 lead as Alyssa Martin nailed three free throws and Bria Beals knocked in a three-pointer.

But Highland came back with a 14-6 second period run  Jordan Bircher hit two baskets and three free throws for seven points and the Bulldogs held a 21-16 halftime lead.

The Hearts tallied only six points in that second quarter.

EHS came back with a 12-point third quarter but Highland scored 16 points to lead 37-28 and finished out with a 15-9 final quarter.

The Hearts had only one player in double digits. Beals led the way with five field goals, four of those from three-point range, for 14 points. Martin fnished with nine.

Effingham was a winner in the junior varsity game.

At Kansas

Tri-County played host to Neoga and edged the Indians by a 42-37 count in Tuesday evening action.

Tri-County held a 20-19 halftime lead. Neoga came back with a 12-9 third quarter to move ahead 31-29 but the host squad went on a 13-6 final quarter for the win.

Neoga was led by Atalie Osborn with 12 points on five field goals and a free throw. Natalie Ballinger added eight points.

The Indians drop to 5-4 on the season and will be back in action Thursday at Oblong/Palestine/Hutsonville.

Tri-County also claimed the junior varsity contest, 39-30.
