Effingham Hands Taylorville Boys Basketball Loss

TAYLORVILLE -- Effingham High School trailed Taylorville 21-12 at halftime but came back with a 38-25 second half to pull out a 50-46 non-conference boys basketball victory Thursday evening.

The Tornadoes held an 11-8 opening quarter lead as Brown connected on two three-pointers and Wheeler hit a three-pointer.

Cole Phillips led the Hearts with four points.

Taylorville then had a 10-4 second period. Champley scored two baskets and Odam a bucket and two free throws.

Effingham's lone points came from Jude Traub and Max Flack with a basket each.

But the Hearts came roaring out after halftime. Cannon Bockhorn got on a roll. Bockhorn didn't score a point in the opening half but nailed three trifectas in the third period for nine points. Phillips hit a basket and was three of four at the line for five points and KJ Kellams connected on a three-pointer and the Hearts moved within 35-32 going into the final quarter.

EHS then continued on its run. Brady McDaniel hit a three-pointer while Kellams scored five points, Philips four and Jake Niebrugge and Bockhorn four each as the Hearts claimed the victory.

Phillips finished with 13 points on four field goals and five of six at the line. Bockhorn added 12 and Kellams ended with 10.
