CHBC Captures Own Girls Thanksgiving Tourney Crown

COWDEN -- Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City handed Effingham Junior Varsity a 55-47 loss in the championship game of its own girls high school Thanksgiving Basketball Tournament Saturday.

In Friday early action, Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City won over South Central, 55-43, Dieterich downed Sandoval 50-37, Cumberland beat Ramsey 52-36 and Effingham bounced North Clay, 63-34. 

In afternoon play, Dieterich beat North Clay 39-28, Effingham JV won over Sandoval 43-31 and CHBC edged Cumberland, 55-51. No score was reported on South Central vs. Ramsey.

In Saturday's finals, Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City claimed the championship with a 55-47 victory over Effingham JV.

Effingham JV edged out to a 17-11 opening quarter lead but CHBC came back with an 18-12 second quarter run to knot the score at 29-29 at halftime.

CHBC then had a big third quarter with a 12-1 run to lead 41-30.

Effingham JV came back but couldn't overtime that third period run.

Macee Rodman led the way for the winners with 24 points on seven field goals, that included one three-pointer, and was nine of 17 at the line. Haley Doty tallied 15.

Effingham JV was led by McKenzie Love with 15 points on seven field goals and one of five at the line. Drew Weis added 11 points and Mara Brown finished with 10.

Cumberland was a winner in the third place game over Dieterich, 60-38.

Cumberland held a 32-22 halftime lead then had a 28-16 second half.

The Pirates had three players hit double figures. Suzy Fritts led the way with 21 points on nine field goals, two of those three-pointers, and one free throw. Jude Miller chipped in with 14 and Alysa Dittamore added 10.

Dieterich was led by Brittney Niemerg with 11 points and Ella Kreke with 10.

Fifth place went to Ramsey over Sandoval, 35-28. North Clay claimed seventh place over South Central, 58-43.

CHBC's Macee Rodman was named the Most Valuable Player. Members of the All-Tournament Team were Drew Weis (Effingham JV), Haley Doty (CHBC), Mara Braun (Effingham JV), Jude Miller (Cumberland), Britney Niemerg (Dieterich), Amiya Ray (Sandoval) and Kelsey Hayes (Ramsey).
