Edwardsville Wins St. Anthony Boys Turkey Tournament, Bulldogs Third, Hearts Seventh

Edwardsville High School captured the championship of the Effingham St. Anthony Boys Turkey Basketball Tournament Saturday.

In Friday play, Edwardsville won over Rantoul, 48-76 while Breese Central downed Robinson, 79-28. Champaign Central won over Mattoon 68-65 and St. Anthony defeated Effingham, 59-42.

In that Friday contest with the two Effingham schools, St. Anthony edged out to a 9-7 opening quarter lead as Ryan Schmidt put in five points. Cole Phillips led the Hearts with four.

The Bulldogs then went on a run, outscoring the Hearts 20-9 to lead 29-16 at halftime.Schmidt hit for six while six other players scored in the quarter.

St. Anthony held a 45-30 lead going into the final period as Brock Fearday went on a nine point run and Miles Waldhoff scored on a three-pointer.

In the final period, the Bulldogs had a slight 14-12 edge.

Schmidt led the way for St. Anthony with 16 points on five field goals, two of those three-pointers, and four of four at the line. B. Fearday chipped in with 13.

Effingham was led by Cannon Bockhorn with nine points.

The teams advanced to play Saturday.

Effingham competed for seventh place and beat Robinson, 66-29.

The Hearts ripped out to a 24-5 opening quarter lead as Bockhorn connected for eight points on two three-pointers and a regular basket.

EHS continued on with a 19-7 second period to lead 43-12 at halftime.

The Hearts had 13 players score in the contest led by Bockhorn with 16 points on five field goals that included two three-pointers and four of four at the line. Cole Phillips tallied eight.

In the third place contest, St. Anthony fell to Breese Central by a 46-43 count.

Breese Central took a 16-13 opening quarter lead on the Bulldogs but St. Anthony came back with a 12-8 second period to move ahead 25-24 at halftime. W. Fearday and Keenan Griffith knocked in a three-pointer each while Griffith added two free throws.

St. Anthony was still in control in the third quarter with a 13-12 edge to lead 38-36. Schmidt tallied four points and W. Fearday hit a trifecta.

But, Breese Central rallied with a 10-5 final quarter to pull in the three-point victory.

Griffith and B. Fearday led the way for St. Anthony with 11 points each.

Named to the All-Tournament Team were Herbert Martin (Edwardsville) who was named Most Valuable Player, Chris Bush (Champaign Central), Cayden Love (Champaign Central), Kaden Rakers (Breese Central), Brock Fearday (St. Anthony), Ryan Schmidt (St. Anthony), Miccah Butler (Edwardsville), Lincoln Hayes (Mattoon), Iose Epenesa (Edwardsville) and DJ Davis (Rantoul).
