EHS Wins Bob Kerans Girls Basketball Tourney

The Hearts finished with a 3-0 record followed by Newton 2-1, Altamont 1-2 and Flora 0-3.

Effingham and Newton squared off in the final contest. The Hearts edged out to a 12-8 opening quarter lead. Alyssa Martin connected for four points and Bria Beals knocked down a three-pointer.

The lead went to 25-20 at halftime.Sidney Donaldson took over scoring duties with six points.

But Newton came roaring back in the third period with a 22-11 run to lead 42-35 going into the final quarter. Karasyn Martin scored nine points while Camryn Martin tallied six and Addy O'Dell five.

But the Hearts rallied in the final quarter with an 18-9 run to claim the 53-51 victory. Averie Wolfe, who had scored only three points through the first three quarters, came back with a three-pointer, a two-pointer and three of three at the line for eight of her team's 18 points. Beals added another trifecta as did Donaldson.

Four players hit double figures for the Hearts. Martin and Donaldson finished with 12 each while Wolfe added 11 and Beals 10.

Newton was led by K. Martin with 18 and O'Dell and C. Martin with 11 each.

Effingham's Saige Althoff, Bella Austin and Alyssa Martin were named to the All-Tournament team along with Newton's Karasyn Martin.

Altamont defeated Flora 43-32 to finish in third place with a 1-2 record.

Flora ran out to a 12-8 opening quarter lead but the Indians came back to hold the Wolves scoreless in the second period while taking a 20-12 halftime lead.

Flora again ruled in the third quarter with a 12-8 run but Altamont still held a 28-24 lead and then had a 15-8 final quarter to put the game away.

Altamont was led by Kaylee Lurkins with 20 points on nine field goals and two of two at the line. Avery Aldrich chipped in with eight points.
