CHBC, Cumberland, EHS Win At CHBC Girls Tournament

COWDEN -- Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City opened its own high school girls Thanksgiving basketball tournament with a victory Tuesday evening.

The Bobcats moved out to a 12-4 opening quarter lead. Ramsey came back with a slight 8-7 second period to trail 19-12 at halftime. CHBC then had a 15-11 third period to lead 34-23 going into the final quarter and finished out with a 9-8 edge.

Macee Rodman led the way with 24 points on 10 field goals, one from three-point range, and three free throws for 24 points. Also in double figures was Haley Doty with 13 points on five field goals, two from three-point land, and one free throw.

Rodman led in steals with six while H. Doty had five. Carissa Wakefield led in rebounds with 10 and blocks with three. Averie Vaughn had two assists. 

In the second game, Sandoval was a 41-39 winner over North Clay (Louisville).

Cumberland than trounced South Central, 71-22.

The Pirates ripped out to a 23-6 opening quarter lead and led 44-10 at halftime.

Jude Miller and Suzy Fritts were the one-two scoring punch for the Pirates. Miller finished with 26 points on 11 field goals, three from three-point range, and two free throws while Fritts had 11 field goals, one a three-pointer, and two free throws for 25. Also in double digits was Jade Carr with 10 points.

Alysa Dittamore led in rebounds with 11. Feirra had three steals.

South Central was led by Addie Conant with 12 points.

In the final game of the evening, Effingham Junior Varsity was a 50-37 winner over Dieterich.

Effingham edged out to a 11-9 opening quarter lead and had the same tally in the second period, 11-9 to lead 22-18 at halftime. The Hearts finished out with a 28-19 second half.

Drew Weis scored 19 for the winners on seven field goals, three from three-point range and two of four at the line.

The tournament continues Friday. In the high school gym, South Central meets CHBC at noon and Cumberland takes on Ramsey at 1:30. In the junior high gym, Sandoval faces Dieterich at noon and North Clay and Effingham JV meet at 1:30.

There will be a one hour break, then at the high school gym, Dieterich meets North Clay at 4 and Effingham JV takes on Sandoval at 5:30. In the junior high gym, Ramsey and South Central square off at 4 and CHBC meets Cumberland at 5:30.

The tourney finishes out Saturday with the seventh place game at 11 a.m., the fifth place game at 12:30 p.m., the third place game at 2 and the championship at 3:30.
