Mulberry Grove, Cumberland, Cerro Gordo Tournament Results

MULBERRY GROVE -- South Central High School claimed its second victory at the Mulberry Grove Boys Basketball Tournament Tuesday evening.

The Cougars handed Lebanon an 88-29 loss. South Central put the game away with a 29-2 opening quarter lead. Westin Neilson connected on two three-pointers and two regular baskets for 10 points in the quarter. Seth Bergmann and Jalen Smith scored six each.

Neilson continued his hot scoring in the second quarter with two three-pointers and a regular basket for eight. Bergmann hit two free throws in the opening quarter and came back to connect on four of four in the second period. Brody Markley contributed a three-pointer as did Trevan Sidwell. The Cougars held a 51-16 halftime lead.

Markley hit two three-pointers and two regular baskets in the third quarter 26-4 run for 10 points. Markley ended up hitting seven field goals, three from trifecta land, and one of two at the line for 18 points.

Also in double figures were Bergmann with 15 on four field goals and seven of seven at the line. Smith tallied 13.

The Cougars finished with 11 three-pointers in the contest led by Neilson with five.

In other games Tuesday evening, Father McGivney downed Ramsey 86-30 and Maryville Christian won over Mount Olive 41-28.

Tonight's games feature Father McGivney against Lebanon at 5:15, St. Elmo/Brownstown taking on Maryville Christian at 6:45 and Mulberry Grove against Mount Olive at 8:15.

Standings in Pool A are Maryville Christian 2-0, St. Elmo/Brownstown 1-0, Mulberry Grove 0-1 and Mount Olive 0-2.

Standings in Pool B are South Central 2-0, Father McGivney 1-0, Lebanon 0-1 and Ramsey 0-2.

The tournament will take off Thursday for Thanksgiving and continue Friday with Ramsey against Lebanon at 5:15, Father McGivney taking on South Central at 6:45 and Mulberry Grove facing St. Elmo/Brownstown at 8:15.

The tournament comes to a close Saturday.

At Toledo

Two games were contested in the Cumberland Tournament Tuesday evening.

Dieterich handed Newton a 62-38 loss in the opening contest.

Lucas Westendorf got the Maroons off in the right direction, scoring 13 of his team's 18 points in the opening quarter. The Eagles were within a point at the end of the period, 18-17. Kody Bergbower scored eight points while Hayden Mulvey chipped in with seven.

But Dieterich went on a run, outscoring Newton 21-10 in the second quarter to lead 39-27 at hafltime. Westendorf continued on with his hot scoring as he hit four baskets, two of those three-pointers, and was three of four at the line for 13 points.

Landon Keck took over the scoring duties for Dieterich in the third period, hitting three baskets and a free throw for seven points as the Maroons had a 16-5 run and led 55-39 going into the final period.

Westendorf led the way for Dieterich with 30 points on 12 field goals, three of those trifectas, and three free throws. Keck chipped in with 14 and Brock Niemerg was on the verge of double digits with nine.

Newton was led by Mulvey with 16 on six baskets, three of those from three-point range, and one of two at the line. Bergbower chipped in with 13.

In the second contest, Cumberland fell to Vandalia, 57-50.

The Pirates held a 14-11 opening quarter lead but Vandalia came back to move ahead 27-26 at halftime. The Vandals then had an 18-11 third quarter run.

Cumberland came back with a 13-12 final period but it was too little, too late.

Vandalia had three players in double figures. Andrew Casey led with 14 while Wade Brannon added 13 and Lucas Bowers 10.

Cumberland was led by Cameron Roedl with 18 on six field goals, four of those from three-point range, and two of two at the line. Chase Stewart chipped in with 15.

The tournament continues Friday as Okaw Valley meets North Clay at 3 p.m. and Newton faces Cumberland at 4:30 in consolation bracket play. In winner bracket action, Casey-Westfield meets Marshall at 6 and Dieterich takes on Vandalia at 7:30.

The tournament comes to a close Saturday with the seventh place game at 1:30, the consolation championship at 3, the third place game at 4:30 and the championship at 6.

At Cerro Gordo

Only one score was reported at the Cerro Gordo Turkey Tournament Tuesday evening.

Heyworth defeated Champaign St. Thomas More, 56-32.

In tonight's games, Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City faces Riverton at 6 p.m. while Windsor/Stewardson-Strasburg takes on Tri-Valley at 7:30 in the junior high gym.

In the high school gym, Heritage meets University High at 4:30, LeRoy takes on Warrensburg-Latham at 6 and Heyworth meets Cerro Gordo-Bement at 7:30.

Friday's play will be pool play with the finals scheduled for Saturday.
