MULBERRY GROVE -- Two National Trail Conference teams claimed victories in opening round play of the Mulberry Grove Boys Basketball Tournament Monday evening.

South Central competed in the first game of the evening and pounded Ramsey by a 90-25 count.

The Cougars ran out to a 25-11 opening quarter lead and held Ramsey to only one point in the second period to lead 56-12 at halftime.

Four players finished in double figures for South Central. Brody Markley led the way with 21 points on eight field goals, two from three-point range, and three of seven at the line. Also in double figures were Seth Bergmann with 18, Hudson Moore with 15 and Westin Neilson with 13.

St. Elmo/Brownstown claimed the second game with a 53-40 win over Mount Olive.

The Eagles edged out to an 11-8 opening quarter lead then kicked into high gear with a 24-9 second period to lead 35-17 at halftime. Mount Olive came back with a 15-5 third period but was too far behind to make up the margin.

Graiden Wilhour and Lowell Wilhour led the way for the winners with 17 points each. Also in double figures was Vadim Plum with 13.

In the final game of the evening, Maryville Christian defeated Mulberry Grove 51-47.

The tournament continues tonight with Father McGivney against Ramsey at 5:15, South Central taking on Lebanon at 6:45 and Maryville Christian meeting Mount Olive at 8:15.

At Cerro Gordo

Two National Trail Conference teams are competing at the Cerro Gordo Turkey Tournament.

Windsor/Stew-Stras claimed a 49-46 victory over Heritage while Argenta-Oreana edged Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City 65-61.

The Hatchets trailed Heritage 9-8 after the opening quarter but back came with an 18-15 second period to lead 26-24 at halftime. Heritage mounted a comeback with a 15-9 third period to pull ahead 39-35.

Here came Windsor/Stew-Stras in the final quarter. The Hatchets and Heritage were tied at 46-46 when Jackson Gurgel hit a three-pointer at the buzzer for a 49-46 win.

Gurgel finished with 24 points to lead the way. He connected on nine field goals that included two three-pointers and was four of seven at the line. Also in double figures was Aiden Sayers with 11 points.

Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City fell in overtime to Argenta-Oreana, 65-59.

Argenta-Oreana held a 17-8 opening quarter lead and led 33-28 at halftime. CHBC came back with a 17-14 third quarter and knotted the score in the final period 57-57, sending the game into overtime where Argenta-Oreana pulled out the win with an 8-4 run.

Wyatt Rueff led the Bobcats with 27 points while AJ Radloff added 10.

In other games, Warrensburg-Latham pounded Unity Christian 93-29 and Cerro Gordo-Bement won over Champaign St. Thomas More 49-45.

The tournament continues tonight but neither Windsor/Stew-Stras or CHBC will be playing. Tonight's schedule includes, in the high school gym, Heyworth against St. Thomas More at 6 and Riverton taking on  Argenta-Oreana at 7:30. In the junior high school gym, University High faces Tri Valley at 6 and Unity Christian meets LeRoy at 7:30.

Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City will be back in action Wednesday in the 6 p.m. game at the junior high school against Riverton. Windsor/Stewardson-Strasburg follows at 7:30 against Tri Valley.

At Toledo

The Cumberland Tournament got underway with two close games Monday evening.

In the opener, Casey-Westfield edged Okaw Valley, 46-43. Okaw Valley held a 34-32 lead after the third quarter. Casey-Westfield then came back with a 14-9 final quarter to pull out the three-point victory. Hayden Parcel scored 10 final quarter points and finished with 19 to lead the Warriors.

The second game went to Marshall, a 59-57 winner over North Clay (Louisville).

The Cardinals edged out to an 11-10 opening quarter lead as Cody Zimdars scored six points and Lucas Griffy hit a three-pointer. North Clay held a 30-25 halftime lead as Zimdars continued on with seven baskets for 14 of his team's 19 points.

The two teams played to a 16-16 third quarter and North Clay held a 46-41 lead.

But here came Marshall with an 18-11 final period as three-pointers poured into the hoop. Bentley Delp hit two three-pointers and two regular baskets for 10 points while Trey Scott and Payton McGuire knocked in a three-pointer each and the Lions pulled out the two-point victory.

The tournament continues tonight as Dieterich faces Newton at 6 p.m. followed by Cumberland taking on Vandalia at 7:30.
