St. Anthony Opens Turkey Tournament With Victory

In the opener, Champaign Central was a 57-50 winner over Breese Central.
The Bulldogs roared out to a 23-9 opening quarter lead to put the game away early. Three-pointers rained through the gym as Ryan Schmidt hit two while Sam Link and Will Fearday added one each. Schmidt finished with 11 points in that opening quarter run while Link added seven.
It was then Brock Fearday's turn to pour in the baskets in the second period. Fearday only took one shot in that opening quarter and missed. But he came roaring back to connect on three trifectas, three regular baskets and a free throw for 16 of his team's 23 points in the quarter. Schmidt added another three-pointer while Luis Gonzalez knocked in a three-pointer and the Bulldogs held a 46-21 halftime lead.
The scoring slowed down in the third quarter. Fearday added on five more points. Rantoul had a 16-12 run as DJ Davis scored 12 of his team's 16 points. But Rantoul still trailed by a considerable 58-35 margin.
St. Anthony came back with a 17-10 final quarter to finish out the scoring.
B. Fearday led the way, hitting nine of 12 field goals that included three trifectas and was two of two at the line for 23 points. He also pulled down 11 rebounds and had two assists. Schmidt added 21 points on six of 11 from the field and five of five at the line. He hit four three-pointers and finished with five rebounds. Also in double figures was Link with 11.
The Bulldogs hit 11 three-pointers in the contest. St. Anthony finished with 64.1 percent from the field and 75 percent at the line. They hit 63.2 percent from three-point range.
The tournament continues tonight as Effingham takes on Edwardsville at 5 p.m. followed by Champaign Central against Robinson at 6:30 and Mattoon taking on Breese Central at 8.
