EHS Coach Schafer Reaches 500th Career Win, T-town Captures NAL Title, Area Girls Roundup

Coach Jeff Schafer (right in red holding the basetball) received his 500th victory as a coach while Effingham High School girls program recorded its 700th win.

DIETERICH -- Effingham High School handed Dieterich a 68-33 loss Friday as the girls basketball season got rolling and it was a momentous evening for the EHS program.

Jeff Schafer got his 500th career victory as a coach while the Effingham High School program now has 700 victories since its inception.

The Hearts took off to a 16-8 opening quarter lead as Alyssa Martin and Averie Wolfe both led the way in scoring.

EHS then went on a roll in the second quarter with a 22-7 surge as Wolfe and Bria Beals connected on a three-pointer each and Sidney Donaldson hit on three baskets and two free throws for eight. The Hearts led 38-15 at halftime.

Ten players scored for the Hearts. Martin and Wolfe led the way with 11 points each while Beals added nine. Saige Althoff and Donaldson scored eight points each.

Dieterich was led by Brittney Niemerg with 17 points on seven field goals, three of those from trifecta land.

In the junior varsity game, Effingham was a 49-14 winner.

EHS was led by Maci Hayes with 17 while Drew Weis and McKenzie Love added 12 each.

Dieterich was led by Callie Faller with 10.

At Altamont

Altamont went on a first quarter tear that put the game in the win category over Richland County, Olney, 48-37 Friday.

The Indians's Kaylee Lurkins connected on five baskets and a free throw while Avery Aldrich added three baskets and Libby Reardon two three-pointers and the Indians held a 23-7 opening quarter lead.

Aldrich came back with a basket and three free throws for five in the second period and Altamont held a 36-17 halftime tallly.

Lurkins finished with 19 points on eight field goals and three of four at the line. Also in double figures was Aldrich with four baskets and five of 10 at the ilne for 13.

Saturday Games

At Paris

Teutopolis won the championship at the North American Lighting Thanksgiving Tournament Saturday.

The Wooden Shoes trounced Richland County, Olney by a 67-19 score. The Shoes ripped out to a 13-2 opening quarter lead as three players scored and moved that to 31-11 at halftime. Chloe Probst scored eight points in that second quarter and Mollie Ruholl added seven after scoring five in the opening period.

The Shoes continued on with a 22-6 third quarter.

Three players hit double figures led by M. Ruholl with 15 on six field goals, two of those three-pointers, and one of one at the line. A. Probst finished with 12. Eva Mette led the team in rebounds with seven while Malea Helmink had six. Helmink led in steals with three. A. Probst had three assists.

Paris won over Charleston 78-19, Terre Haute North downed Danville 54-41 and Terre Haute South beat Champaign Central, 43-35.

The Teutopolis win over Richland County, put the Wooden Shoes into the championship game against Paris and the Shoes claimed a 50-37 victory.

Once again, the Shoes took the early lead with a 15-8 count after the opening quarter. Paris came back with a 15-11 second quarter run to pull within 26-22 at halftime.

But T-town came out with a 10-5 third quarter as C. Probst connected for six points. T-town then had a final 14-9 quarter for the win.

C. Probst led the way with 17 points on seven field goals, one a three-pointer, and two of four at the line. Also in double figures was A. Probst with 11. Kelsey Niemerg and Helmink scored nine each.

A. Probst, Niemerg and Helmink pulled down eight rebounds each. C. Probst had two steals and one block. Helmink also had one block.

At Pana

Brownstown/St. Elmo competed in the Orange Pool at the Pana Thanksgiving Tournament.

BSE easily won over Centralia Christ Our Rock Lutheran, 65-17.

The Bombers ran out to a 27-2 opening quarter lead behind the 14 points scored by Dayana Haslett. Haslett connected on five regular baskets, one three-pointer and a free throw. Jaydin Huddlestun tallied seven points.

BSE went on for a 15-3 second period to lead 42-5 at halftime.

The Bombers' Haslett went on another run in the third period, scoring three trifectas and three regular baskets for 15 of her team's 21 points and a 63-7 lead.

Haslett finished with 29 points on 12 field goals, four of those from three-point range, and one of two at the line. Peyton Barker finished with eight points.

In other games, Highland won over Pana 60-31, Camp Point Central trounced Mattoon 61-22, Highland downed Mattoon 57-33, Gillespie beat Centralia Christ Our Rock Lutheran 42-11, Camp Point Central downed Pana 76-35 amd Breese Mater Dei defeated CORL 43-6.

In the Orange Pool, Mater Dei finished 3-0, Brownstown/St. Elmo 2-1, Gillespie 1-2 and CORL 0-3. In the Blue Pool, Camp Point Central finished 3-0 followed by Highland 2-1, Pana 1-2 and Mattoon 0-3.

The tournament continues Friday at Pana High School, Pana will meet CORL at 1 p.m. followed by Mattoon against Gillespie at 2:30, Brownstown/St. Elmo against Camp Point Central at 4 and Highland facing Mater Dei at 5:30.

The finals will take place Saturday.

At Nokomis

In the Nokomis Tip-off Tournament, Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City finished fourth out of eight teams competing Friday and Saturday.

After winning in opening round play Thursday, the Bobcats faced Pawnee Friday and fell 33-18.

Pawnee held an 8-2 opening quarter lead and pushed that to 23-13 at halftime. Pawnee then had an 8-3 third quarter.

Macee Rodman and Haley Doty scored six each for the Bobcats.

That put Pawnee in the championship game and CHBC in the third place contest.

The Bobcats then met Vandalia and lost by a 50-43 count to finish fourth.

CHBC held a 7-6 opening quarter lead and still held that one point lead at halftime, 17-16. But Vandalia came back in the third quarter to tie the score at 30-30 going into the final period and outscored the Bobcats 20-13 for the win.

Rodman scored 22 for the Bobcats, hitting eight field goals, that inluded one three-pointer and five free throws. Doty chipped in with eight.
