MATTOON -- Effingham Sacred Heart split victories with Mattoon St. John's in junior high boys basketball competition Tuesday evening.

The Shamrocks were winners in seventh-grade action by a 46-34 count.

St. John's took a 14-7 opening quarter lead and led 24-17 at halftime. But Sacred Heart mounted a big comeback with a 21-4 third quarter to move ahead 38-28.

Three players scored in double figures for Sacred Heart. Gabe Traub led the way with 16 points while Bryce Hayes added 12 and Ruben Jansen chipped in with 11.

In the eighth-grade contest, St. John's was a 49-41 winner. This time around it was St. John's that came back from a first half deficit. Sacred Heart held a 26-22 halftime lead. St. John's had a 10-8 third quarter and finished off with a 17-7 final quarter run.

Sacred Heart had even scoring as Keaton Kruger, Traub and Mason Karolewicz led the way for Sacred Heart with 13 points each.

At Dieterich

Dieterich held a Seventh-Grade Tournament Tuesday evening.

Newton St. Thomas captured a 31-12 win over Dieterich. St. Thomas held a 9-3 opening quarter lead and led 18-9 at halftime.

Two players finished in double figures for St. Thomas, Gier with 15 and Beals with 14.

Dieterich was led by Uthell and Lustig with five each.

Olney St. Joseph downed Newton St. Thomas 28-22. St. Thomas held an 8-6 first quarter lead and led 17-10 at halftime. But St. Joseph came back with a 7-1 third quarter run to pull within 18-17 and then had an 11-4 final period for the win.

Kuenstler led the winners with 10 points.

St. Thomas was led by Gier with 13 points.

St. Joseph then won the tournament with a 39-13 victory over Dieterich.

St. Joe took a 10-2 opening quarter lead and led 21-8 at halftime.

Zuber led the way for the winners with nine points.

Dieterich was led by Lustig with four.

At Vandalia

Altamont picked up two victories over host Vandaila in Tuesday evening play.

In the seventh-grade contest, Altamont was a 40-17 winner.

The two teams were tied at 5-5 in the first quarter before stepping away to a 12-6 second period for a 17-11 halftime lead. Then Altamont put it in high gear with a 20-2 third quarter run. Blayke Huston led the way with six points while Jack Neu added five.

Peyton O'Dell and Neu finished with nine points each while Huston added eight.

In eighth-grade action, Vandalia won 48-22. Vandalia edged out to a 12-5 opening quarter lead then opened the game wide with a 17-5 second quarter to lead 29-10 at halftime.

Altamont came back with an 8-1 third quarter but Vandalia got back on track in the final period.

O'Dell and Neu led the way for Altamont with six points each.

At Cowden

Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City was a winner over Pana St. Patrick's in both seventh- and eighth-grade action Tuesday evening.

CHBC won the seventh-grade game 35-14. Pana St. Pats led 6-5 after the opening quarter. CHBC took an 11-8 halftime lead then had a 24-6 second half run.

Drake Thull led the way for the Bobcats with 15 points. Lane Reed and Eastin Kramer added six each.

In the eighth-grade contest, CHBC held only a one point lead at halftime and trailed 30-28 going into the final period. That's when the Bobcats broke free with a 12-2 run for the 40-32 victory.

Zach Bennett tallied 17 points while Kaisyn Calame added nine in the win.

At Casey

Casey-Westfield played host to Neoga and captured two victories Tuesday evening.

Casey-Westfield was a winner in the seventh-grade contest 43-14. The winners took a 25-8 halftime lead.

Leading Neoga was Baylor Matusas and Liam Kenworthy with six points each.

In the eighth-grade contest, Casey-Westfield ran out to a 16-1 opening quarter lead and won 38-23.

Neoga was led by Jude Finney with seven points and Brody Strobl with six.
