Bulldogs, Eagles, Cougars, Hatchets, Cardinals Win Girls Basketball Openers

Effingham St. Anthony opened its high school girls basketball season against a tough National Trail Conference opponent Dieterich Tuesday evening.

 

The Bulldogs came out a 62-42 winner with a quick 19-8 opening quarter start. Nancy Ruholl got St. Anthony off in the right direction, scoring six points in the quarter on a regular basket, a three-pointer and a free throw. Adysen Rios knocked down a three-pointer while Ali Kollmann had a basket and two free throws.

Brittney Niemerg hit a basket and two free throws for the Movin' Maroons.

The Bulldogs kept the pressure going  in the second period with a 14-4 run to lead 33-12 at halftime and put the game away. Rios scored six points while Ruholl and Kollmann hit two baskets each.

Ruholl finished with 22 points for the winners. The junior All-State performer also had five rebounds and five steals. Rios finished in double figures with 13 and had eight steals and five rebounds. Kollmann also ended in double figures with 12 and had four rebounds.

"Junior guard Lilly Gannaway did a great job commanding the game with six points, three steals, four assists and only one turnover," said St. Anthony Coach Aaron Rios. "Nancy is off to a great start.

"We balanced production tonight from eight out of the 10 players that played in the varsity game. We finished the game with 18 steals, 28 rebounds, 12 assists and only 11 turnovers. We shot 77.8 percent from the free throw line with 14 of 18."

St. Anthony returns to action Thursday, traveling to Sandoval.

Dieterich had two players hit double figures. Brittney Niemerg led the way with 14 points on four field goals, one a three-pointer, and five of nine at the line. Addison Miller chipped in with 12.

In the junior varsity contest, St. Anthony was a 43-27 winner. Aubrey Denning produced 24 points, scoring 10 in the opening quarter. She hit 12 field goals, one a three-pointer.

Dieterich was led in the junior varsity contest by Cassidy Goebel with nine points.

At Windsor

Windsor/Stewardson-Strasburg took the opening quarter lead and never relinquished it in a 57-41 victory over Cerro Gordo Tuesday evening.

The Hatchets held a 15-9 first quarter lead and led 29-17 at halftime.

Three players finished in double figures for the Hatchets. Ellie Wittenberg led the way with 18 points on six field goals that included one three-pointer, and five of seven at the line. Samantha Hayes tallied 12 while Katelyn VonBehrns added 10.

WSS struggled at the free throw line with only nine of 24 for 37.5 percent.

Cerro Gordo claimed the junior varsity victory by only one point, 25-24.

Windsor/Stew-Stras will be right back in action Thursday at Newton.

At Farina

South Central took a big opening quarter lead on Martinsville then had to hold off the Bluestreaks in the second half for a 54-49 victory Tuesday evening.

The Cougars moved ahead 13-5 in the first quarter as Addie Conant scored five points while Baylee Brown and Perci Reid finished with four each.

The lead went to 26-15 at halftime. Brown connected on a three-pointer and had five points in the quarter.

Martinsville came back with an 18-16 third quarter. But South Central then had a 16-12 final quarter run.

Three players hit double digits for the Cougars. Conant led the way with 14 points while Brown added 13 and Reid 12. Kennah Hiestand was on the verge of double figures with nine.

Martinsville was led by K. Remlinger and J. Wilhoit with 11 each and A. Adams with 10.

At Fairfield

Newton claimed a victory over Fairfield in action Tuesday evening by a big count, 52-18.

The Eagles ripped out to a 17-2 opening quarter lead and led 38-10 at halftime.

Two players finished in double digits for the Eagles. C. Martin tallied 17 points on seven field goals, that included two three-pointers and was one of two at the line. K. Martin added 16 on six field goals, four of those from three-point range.

Probst led the team in rebounds with five. O'Dell had four steals and also led in assists with seven.

The Eagles will return to action Thursday hosting Windsor/Stewardson-Strasburg.

Fairfield won the junior varsity contest, 23-22. Newton was led by Bergbower with 11 points.

At Oblong

North Clay (Louisville) picked up a victory over Oblong. Tuesday evening.

The Cardinals won 60-50. North Clay is back in action Thursday hosting South Central.

 

At Vandalia

Altamont traveled to Vandalia and fell to the Vandals by a 53-45 tally Tuesday evening.

The Vandals edged out to a 10-9 opening quarter lead and held a 23-21 halftime lead.

Altamont came back with a 16-14 third quarter as Kylie Osteen connected on three baskets for seven points while Avery Aldrich added four. The Indians moved ahead 38-37.

But Vandalia finished strong with a 16-8 final period. Lupion scored nine points to lead the way in the quarter and finished with 20 points.

Altamont had two players in double figures. Kaylee Lurkins led with 14 points on seven field goals and Osteen tallied 13 on five field goals and two of three at the line.

The Vandals were led by Madison Lupton with 20 points and Ollie Whitehead with 10.

In the junior varsity contest, was a 41-32 winner.

Justycee Higgs led with 11 points for the Indians.
