Teutopolis, EHS, BSE, Neoga Win Girls H.S. Basketball Openers

PARIS -- Teutopolis High School opened the girls basketball season at the North American Lighting Thanksgiving Basketball Tournament Monday evening.

The Wooden Shoes pounded Terre Haute South by a 65-11 count at Eveland Gymnasium.

T-town stepped out to a 17-4 opening quarter lead as Kelsey Niemerg hit a basket and was four of five at the line and Anna Probst nailed a three-pointer,

The Shoes continued on with their hot scoring from the line, connecting on nine more free throws in the second period. T-town's defense held Terre Haute South to only one point on a free throw as the Shoes held a 40-5 halftime lead.

Ten players scored in the contest for T-town with two hitting double figures. Chloe Probst led the way with four field goals and four of four at the line for 14 points while Niemerg added 11, scoring two baskets and seven of nine from the free throw line.

Malea Helmink led the Shoes in rebounds with 12. Niemerg led the way in steals with four.

In the other contest at Eveland, Richland County defeated Champaign Central, 48-43.

In two games at Paris High School, Paris won over Terre Haute North, 51-44 and Danville defeated Charleston, 45-34.

The tournament continues Wednesday with four more games. At Paris High School, Richland County meets Terre Haute South at 5:15 p.m. and  Teutopolis takes on Champaign Central at 6:45 p.m.

In games at Eveland Gym, Terre Haute North faces Charleston at 5:15 p.m. and Paris takes on Danville at 6:45.

The tourney continues Saturday morning with four games and finishes out with four more games Saturday afternoon.

At Effingham

Effingham High School took a 20-11 opening quarter lead and went on for a 58-33 victory over Robinson in its season-opener Monday evening.

The Hearts' Averie Wolfe led the way in the opening quarter with six points while Saige Althoff added five. The Hearts hit three trifectas as Wolfe, Althoff and Sidney Donaldson connected from beyond the arc.

EHS kept the pressure on in the second period with a 16-6 run. Wolfe contributed two more three-pointers and a regular basket for eight while Alyssa Martin chipped in with four points and the Hearts held a 36-17 halftime lead.

The Hearts continued the pressure in the second half with a 22-16 run for the win.

Wolfe led the way with 16 points on six field goals, three of those from beyond the arc, and one of two at the line. Martin chipped in with 14 points on six field goals and two of two at the line. 

The Hearts also claimed the junior varsity win by a 49-17 score.

Mara Braun led with 14 points while McKenzie Love added 12.

At Effingham

At Brownstown

Brownstown/St. Elmo played host to Cumberland and sent the Pirates home with a 59-29 loss Monday evening.

The Bombers ran out to a 16-2 opening quarter lead as Presley Williams scored seven points, Danika Ramsey four and Dayana Haslett hit a three-pointer.

The lead stood at 29-13 at halftime. D. Haskett led the way with six points and Madi Miller added five.

Cumberland played closer in the second quarter with 11 points as Carr hit a three-pointer and a regular basket for five and Miller contributed a three-pointer. BSE held a 29-13 halftime lead.

BSE remained in control with an 18-10 third quarter. Haslett scored half of her team's points with nine. Addie Sasse chipped in with five, knocking in a three-pointer.

The Bombers finished out strong with a 12-6 final period.

Three players ended in double figures for the winners. Haslett hit nine field goals, three from beyond the arc, and was two of two at the line for 23 points. Miller and Williams added 10 points each.

Cumberland was led by Miller with 14 points on five field goals, two of those three-pointers, and two of two at the line.

At Brownstown

At Neoga

Brynn Richards went on a scoring binge, hitting 10 field goals and was eight of 11 at the line for 28 points for Neoga.

The Indians trailed Central A&M 9-8 after the opening quarter but moved ahead 22-20 at halftime and went on for a 43-39 victory Monday evening.

Molly Moran chipped in with seven points for the winners.

Central A&M finished with five three-pointers while Neoga did not connect on one. Neoga's big scoring came at the free throw line where the Indians put in 15 of 27 for 55.5 percent while Central A&M hit only eight of 23 for 34.7 percent.

The game was the season-opener for Neoga who doesn't return to action until next Monday, traveling to Marshall.

Neoga also claimed the junior varsity win by a 51-30 tally.
