DIETERICH -- Olney St. Joseph won the Dieterich Eighth-Grade Boys Basketball Tournament Monday evening.

In the opening contest, Newton St. Thomas was a 31-18 winner over Dieterich.

St. Thomas held a 7-5 first half lead then had a 24-13 second half run. Hermann led the way for St. Thomas with 13 points while G. Bierman added 11.

Dieterich was led by McQueen with eight.

In the second contest, Olney St. Joseph was a 43-27 winner over Newton St. Thomas.

St. Joseph pushed ahead 10-5 in the openimg quarter but led by just four at halftime, 19-15. In the third quarter, L. Hallam scored nine points as St. Joseph had a 15-3 run and never looked back.

Hallam led the winners with 17 points while Hart added 13.

St. Thomas  was led by Seaton with nine points.

In the third contest, St. Joseph handled Dieterich by a 44-17 tally.

St. Joseph pushed into a 24-12 halftime lead. Hart scored 12 and Hallam 11 for the winners.

Dieterich was led by McQueen with six.

At Effingham

Effingham St. Anthony and Marshall each picked up a win Monday evening.

The Bullpups captured the seventh-grade contest, 45-27.

St. Anthony ran out to a 17-7 first quarter lead and led 23-13 at halftime. St. Anthony had a 22-14 second half.

Parker Phillips and Jaxon Having were the one-two scoring punch for the Bullpups with 11 and 10 respectively.

In the eighth-grade contest, Marshall edged St. Anthony, 27-26. 

The two teams were tied at 7-7 in the opening quarter before Marshall moved into a 17-11 halftime lead. Marshall had a 6-4 third quarter to lead 23-15.

St. Anthony came roaring back with an 11-4 final period only to fall a point short.

B. Verdeyen led the way with 12 points for the Bullpups.

At Altamont

Neoga and Altamont split victories Monday evening.

Altamont was a 45-42 winner in the seventh-grade game in overtime.

Neoga held an 8-7 opening quarter lead and led 20-18 at halftime. Neoga was still in charge after three quarters by a 32-28 tally. But here came Altamont with a 10-6 run in the final period to knot the score at 38-38 sending the contest into overtime.

In the overtime period, Jack Neu connected on five points while Hayden Veteto hit a two-pointer and Altamont pulled out a 45-42 win.

Neu finished with 22 points on eight baskets that included two three-pointers and was four of five at the line. Also in double figures was Veteto with 14.

Neoga was led by Matusas with 19 points on nine two-pointers and one of two at the line. Nohren added 10.

In the eighth-grade contest, Neoga claimed a 34-30 win. Neoga held an 8-5 opening quarter lead and led 18-13 at halftime. Neoga pushed that to 26-19 going into the final quarter and held off a challenge by Altamont.

Brady Strobl led the way with 12 points while Benji Strobl tallied 11 for the winners.

Altamont was  led by O'Dell with 11.

At Beecher City

Cumberland came calling and claimed two victories over Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City Monday evening.

Cumberland was a 32-24 winner in the seventh-grade game.

CHBC held an 8-5 opening quarter lead and led 12-10 at halftime. Cumberland came back with a 10-6 third quarter and had a 12-6 final period for the win.

Holden Cisney scored 13 for the winners with five baskets, three of those three-pointers.

CHBC was led by Drake Thull with 14 points.

Cumberland then picked up a 39-24 win over CHBC in the eighth-grade contest.

Cumberland held a 21-8 halftime lead.

Two players hit double figures for the winners. Landon Carlen led the way with 15 points while Reed Walker added 12.

CHBC was led by Kaisyn Calame with 13.

At Beecher City

At Oblong

Jasper County played host to Oblong and sent the visitors home with two losses Monday.

In the seventh-grade encounter, Jasper County ripped out to a 29-7 halftime lead and went on for a 44-16 victory.

Maverik Horner led the way with 13 points while Alex Keller added 12. Trace Cornwell led in rebounds while Jacob Guzman was the top defender and Grant Frichtl the top passer.

In the second game, Jasper County won 33-29. Jasper County held a one point lead at halftime then had a 12-4 third quarter run.

There was no scoring listed for either team.

At Clay City

North Clay (Louisville) was a winner over Clay City in both seventh- and eighth-grade play Monday evening.

North Clay captured the seventh-grade contest, 49-6. The winners zipped out to a 20-2 opening quarter lead and never looked back.

Ruholl tallied 16 points for the winners while McCulley added 11.

Clay City was led by D. Yebinger with four.

In the eighth-grade game, North Clay again zipped out to a big opening quarter lead by a 15-5 count and led 33-16 at halftime.

Lewis provided the big scoring punch with 27 points on 11 field goals, one a three-pointer, and four of nine at the line. Also in double figures was Frost with 15.

Clay City was led by Z. Harvel with 19 and T. Boyd with 14.
