St. Michael Wins NTC Eighth-Grade Girls Basketball Tourney

BEECHER CITY -- Sigel St. Michael captured the championship of the National Trail Conference Eighth-Grade Girls Basketball Tournament Saturday.

St. Michael took on Neoga for the title and won 28-25.

Neoga edged out to an 8-4 opening quarter lead and led 17-12 at halftime.

St. Michael came back with a 12-3 third period to lead 24-20 going into the final quarter and held off Neoga for the victory.

Bella Ordner led the way for the Sharpshooters with 14 points while Brianna Niebrugge added five.

Neoga was led by Bliss Bear with seven and Aubrey Ballinger with six.

In the third place contest, Dieterich was a 14-10 winner over Effingham Sacred Heart. Dieterich stepped out to an 8-2 opening quarter lead and led 10-4 at halftime. The two teams played to a 4-4 second half.

Claire Faller led the way for the winnrs with six points.

Sacred Heart was led by Lydia Aldrich with three.

In the consolation championship, South Central claimed a 24-15 win over Brownstown/St. Elmo.

South Central held a 10-4 halftime lead then had a 14-11 second half. The winners were led by Skylar Webster with 12 points.

Brownstown/St. Elmo was led by Aubree Towler with 15.

In two Friday games, Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City downed Brownstown/St. Elmo 17-14. BSE took a 10-2 opening quarter lead but CHBC came back with a 7-0 second period to pull within 10-9. BSE still held a lead going into the final quarter, 14-13 but CHBC had a 4-0 run for the victory.

Reese Vaughn led with seven points for the winners. BSE was led by Savannah Mason and Macy Claycomb with six each.

South Central then downed North Clay (Louisville) 24-14. Leading 9-5 at halftime, South Central had a 13-3 third period run to put the game into the win category.

Teagan Cowger scored eight and Annie Ruholl seven for the winners.

North Clay was led by Alayna Steele with six.
