St. Anthony, T-town, Altamont Lutheran Suffer Losses At State Baseball Tourneys

EAST PEORIA -- Effingham St. Anthony and Teutopolis suffered baseball losses in opening round play of the Illinois Elementary School Association State Tournaments Friday.

St. Anthony competed in the Class 1A State Tournament at Eastside Centre and fell to Roanoke-Benson, 2-1.

The Bullpups took a 1-0 lead in the third inning and held that until Roanoke-Benson tied in the sixth. The game went 12 innings before Roanoke-Benson pulled out a 2-1 victory.

St. Anthony had eight hits led by Bentley Baudier with a single and double, Curtis Tingley with a double. Charlie Hoene two singles and Andrew Wagner with a single and an RBI.

Roanoke-Benson finished with seven hits. There were no errors in the contest.

In other opening round contests, Paris Crestwood beat Colchester West Prairie 7-2, Bloomington Corpus Christi blanked St. Anne 12-0, and Springfield Blessed Sacrament won over Joliet St. Raymond 12-0.

In semifinal play, Paris Crestwood edged Bloomington Corpus Christi 9-8 and Roanoke-Benson also edged its opponent, Springfield Blessed Sacrament 6-5.

In Saturday action, third place went to Springfield Blessed Sacrament over Bloomington Corpus Christi 6-0 and the championship was claimed by Roanoke-Benson over Paris Crestwood, 9-8.

In the Class 2A State Tournament, Teutopolis fell to Pleasant Plains 7-0 in the opening round.

Pleasant Plains tallied three in the third, one in the sixth and finished with three in the seventh.

The Wooden Shoes had only one hit in the contest, a single by Maddux Pals.

Max Johnson threw the one-hitter, allowing only one walk while striking out 10.

T-town ends the season with a 13-9 record.

In other first round games, St. Joseph edged Staunton 1-0, Beecher won over Green Valley Midwest Central 3-1 and Washington downed Decatur Our Lady of Lourdes 10-6.

Pleasant Plains, with a 30-0 record, faced Washington in the semifinals and won 9-6. In the other semifinal, St. Joseph trounced Beecher 14-0.

The third place contest went to Washington over Beecher 11-4 while the championship was claimed by St. Joseph over Pleasant Plains 4-1.

At Coulterville

Our Lady of Mount Carmel ended Altamont Lutheran's stay in the Class S State Tournament at Coulterville.

The winner finished with a 10-0 victory.

In other contests, Summersville won over Century 7-3, St. John's Lutheran downed Gallatin 12-3 and Cisne edged Valmeyer 11-10.

The tourney continues Tuesday with Our Lady of Mount Carmel meeting Summersville at 1 and St. John's Lutheran taking on Cisne at 3. The two winners advance to the championship game Thursday.
