Robinson Edges T-town For Newton Sectional Crown

NEWTON -- Teutopolis High School moved into a 19-14 opening quarter lead but Robinson came back to outscore the Wooden Shoes over the next two quarters and pull out a 59-55 victory to win the Class 2A Newton Girls Basketball Sectional Thursday evening.

Kelsey Niemerg went on a nine-point first period run, connecting on three baskets, one from three-point range, and two of two at the line. Summer Wall hit a three-pointer and Chloe Probst put in five points and Mollie Ruholl a basket.

But the Maroons went on a run of their own. Marisa Zane put in four baskets, one a three-point variety, for nine points while Addy O'Dell hit fo five points and the Maroons held a 28-27 halftime lead.

The lead went to 42-37 in the third quarter as Robinson consistently scored another 14 points. M. Zane hit seven points while Katelyn Jones scored on a three-pointer and Alexa Zane tallied four.

Probst was the leader for the Shoes with six points in the quarter.

T-town came back with an 18-17 final quarter but couldn't make up the five-point deficit. Probst scored on a basket and four of four at the line while Ruholl put in another three-pointer and was two of two at the line.

Probst finished with 20 points to lead the Shoes. She connected on six field goals and was six of eight at the line. She also led in rebounds with seven and had two assists. Niemerg tallied 11 points while M. Ruholl added 10. Isabelle Zerrusen finished with five rebounds.

Coach Laurie Thompson's crew ended the season with a 21-12 record.

Robinson pushed its record to 27-5 and will now face Peotone at the Tolono Unity Super-Sectional. Peotone edged Watseka, 31-30 to win the Gilman Iroquois West Sectional.

In other sectionals Thursday, Camp Point Central Co-op won over Pleasant Plains 43-37 at Beardstown, Peoria Notre Dame handed Deer Creek-Mackinaw a 59-37 loss, Wilmette Regina Dominican edged Chicago Crane Medical Prep 40-37, Chicago Phillips downed Elmhurst IC Catholic 62-59, Nashville beat Breese Central 46-34 and Rock Island Alleman downed Stillman Valley, 45-36.

Wilmette Regina Dominican and Chicago Phillips meet at the Cicero Super-Sectional, Peoria Notre Dame faces Rock Island Alleman at the Manlius Bureau Valley Super-Sectional and Camp Point Central Co-op takes on Nashville at the Vandalia Super-Sectional Monday.
