Altamont Girls Headed To Super-Sectional

Altamont captured the championship of the Class 1A Moweaqua Central A&M Sectional.

MOWEAQUA -- It's down to only eight teams remaining across the state of Illinois in Class 1A high school girls basketball. And, one of those teams is Altamont.

The Indians came out of the Moweaqua Central A&M Sectional championship contest Thursday evening with a 39-29 victory over Catlin Salt Fork.

Coach Craig Carr's squad played to a 4-4 opening quarter tie with Salt Fork. The lone points for the Indians were a basket by Kylie Osteen and two free throws from Grace Nelson.

Nelson then started to connect and hit three baskets in the second quarter as the Indians moved into a 12-10 slowing-scoring halftime lead.

Altamont began to find its rhythm with a 10-9 third quarter edge to lead 22-19 going into the final period. Nelson connected for five points while Skylie Klein hit a three-pointer and K. Osteen put in another basket.

Then it was a walk to the free throw line in the final quarter for the Indians. Nelson hit two baskets and was seven of eight at the gratis stripe. Peyton Osteen put in two free throws and Kaylee Lurkins hit two baskets. The Indians had a 17-10 final quarter run for the 10-point winning margin.

Altamont now advances to the Farmer City Blue Ridge Super-Sectional Monday to face Cissna Park Co-op at 7 p.m.

Cissna Park Co-op had to go two overtimes to beat Gibson City/Melvin Sibley to win the Colfax Ridgeview Sectional, 43-42.

In other sectional championships, Glasford Illini Bluffs beat Abington-Avon, 44-37; Skokie Ida Crown won over Des Plaines Willows Academy, 61-56; Goreville downed Edwards County (Albion), 64-43; Peru St. Bede edged Serena, 50-48; Galena won over Rockford Lutheran, 46-30 and Okawville beat Glen Carbon Father McGivney, 41-29.

In the other super-sectionals Monday, Glasford Illini Bluffs meets Galena at Brimfield, Skokie Ida Crown takes on Peru  St. Bede at  Elgin Harvest Christian Academy and Goreville squares off against Okawville at Okawville.

The winners from Monday's super-sectionals advance to the Class 1A State Tournament Thursday at Normal CEFCU Arena.
