St. Anthony To Play In Title Game, Dieterich Sees Boys Basketball Season End

BETHANY -- Effingham St. Anthony downed Nokomis, 45-33 Wednesday evening to head to the championship game of the Class 1A Bethany Okaw Valley Boys Basketball Regional.

Two players hit double figures for the Bulldogs as Collin Westendorf and Ryan Schmidt scored 13 each.

Both started with a three-pointer in the opening quarter 14-5 run. Samuel Link and Brock Fearday provided four each.

Nokomis got unwound but could only play St. Anthony to a 12-12 second period tie. Westendorf continued on with two baskets and two free throws for six points while Max Koenig scored all six of his total points in the quarter. The Bulldogs held a 26-17 halftime lead.

Nokomis continued on with a 7-5 third quarter to pull within 31-24.

But the Bulldogs' Schmidt went on a seven point run in the final period and the Bulldogs finished with the 12-point victory. Schmidt connected on a basket and was five of five at the line.

Westendorf hit five field goals, one a three-pointer, and was two of three at the line while Schmidt scored off of three field goals, one a three-pointer, and was six of seven at the line.

The second game of the evening saw Arcola down Bethany Okaw Valley, 51-38.

St. Anthony and Arcola will now face at 7 p.m. Friday for the regional championship and a berth in the St. Anthony Sectional.

Class 1A Edwards County (Albion) Regional

Top-seeded Dieterich fell to ninth-seeded Edwards County (Albion) in this regional Wednesday evening.

Edwards County's Evan Rhodes and Jax Duncan provided the one-two scoring punch. Rhodes got the Lions off in the right direction with a 14-10 opening quarter lead. Rhodes connected on three trifectas and Duncan hit one from beyond the arc.

But the Movin' Maroons came back with an 18-15 second period to trail by one point at halftime, 29-28.

Lucas Westendorf went on a run, scoring 10 points on five baskets. Caleb Gephart, who scored all 10 of the Maroons' opening quarter points, came back with four in the second period.

Dieterich then came out in the third quarter on a 16-14 run to move into a 44-43 lead. Gephart continued on with two three-pointers and Landen Keck added three of four at the line.

But the bottom fell out in the final period. Edwards County went on a 24-18 run to pull out the victory. The Lions put in 16 of 21 from the free throw line in the quarter. Duncan tallied two baskets and was eight of nine at the line for 12 points.

Dieterich as led by Gephart with an outstanding 34 points on 14 field goals, half of those from three-point range, and one of three at the line. Also in double figures was Westendorf with 18 on nine field goals.

Edwards County was led by Duncan with 25 points and Rhodes with 21.

In the second contest, Centralia Christ Our Rock Lutheran downed Red Hill (Bridgeport), 75-44.

Edwards County now meets Centralia Christ Our Rock Lutheran at 7 p.m. Friday for the regional championship.
