Altamont Wins, St. Anthony Falls In Girls Basketball Sectional

The Indians handed Tuscola a 52-37 loss in the second contest of the Class 1A Moweaqua Central A&M Girls Basketball Sectional.
Coach Craig Carr's team trailed Tuscola 12-10 after the opening quarter. Grace Nelson kept the Indians going as she hit two regular baskets, a three-pointer and one of three at the line for eight of her team's 10 points.
Ava Boyer was the ringleader for Tuscola, also with eight points.
But Altamont came back in the second quarter with a 12-9 run to lead 22-21 at halftime. Nelson went to work with two regular baskets, a three-pointer and two of two at the line for nine points while Skylie Klein hit a three-pointer.
The Indians then decided it was time to say goodbye to Tuscola.
Altamont went on a 14-7 third quarter run as five players scored. Peyton Osteen and Klein hit a three-pointer each while Nelson added five, Kylie Osteen a basket and Kaylee Lurkins a free throw.
From there, Altamont finished strong with a 16-9 final quarter. Nelson added on nine more points while P. Osteen had four.
Nelson tallied 31 points on 11 of 17 from the field and seven of nine at the line. She added four rebounds and led in assists with six.
P. Osteen finished with nine points and pulled down four rebounds. Lurkins led the way in rebounds with five.
The Indians improved to 25-6 on the season while Tuscola ended its season at 28-3.
In the opening game, Effingham St. Anthony fell to Catlin Salt Fork, 51-42.
The Spartans took a 12-6 opening quarter lead as five players scored led by Alexa Jamison with a three-pointer and Macie Russell with a field goal and free throw for three.
Nancy Ruholl connected on the Bulldogs' lone three-pointer of the contest while Addi Nuxoll hit a basket and Stacie Vonderheide a free throw.
Salt Fork pushed its lead to 26-14 at halftime as three players scored four points each and Jamison hit two free throws.
Vonderheide and Ruholl scored four each for the Bulldogs.
St. Anthony could never get untracked as the Bulldogs fell behind 41- 26 after the third quarter. Vonderheide hit three baskets for six while Ruholl connected on two old-fashioned three-point plays, also for six.
Vonderheide finally broke free in the final quarter, hitting five baskets and a free throw for 11 but it wasn't enough as the Bulldogs fell by nine points.
Jamison led the way in the final quarter run for Salt Fork with eight points and finished with 13 for the contest while Russell added 12.
St. Anthony was led by Vonderheide with 10 field goals and two of three at the line for 22 points. Ruholl chipped in with 15 on five field goals, one a three-poimter and two of two at the line.
The Bulldogs hit 54.5 percent from the field and 62.5 percent at the line with five of eight.
Catlin Salt Fork hit 51 percent from the field and 80 percent at the line with 12 of 15.
St. Anthony ended its season with a 24-9 record.
Altamont and Catlin Salt Fork (28-5) will meet for the sectional championship Thursday at 6 p.m.
