Dieterich Wins, EHS, T-town Drop Boys Basketball Contests

GRAYVILLE -- Dieterich took charge early and never let up in a 66-45 non-conference boys high school basketball victory over Grayville Thursday evening.

 

The Movin' Maroons stepped out to a 19-11 opening quarter lead behind Lucas Westendorf's nine points as he connected on three regular baskets and a three-pointer.

Grayville's Ty'zae Rowland kept his team in the contest, scoring eight of the opening quarter 11 points.

The two teams played to a 15-15 second quarter. Caleb Gephart took over the scoring duties for Dieterich with three baskets and two of two at the line for eight points. Westendorf chipped in with two more baskets and had 13 by halftime.

Rowland continued to keep Grayville in the game, scoring 11 of his team's 15 second period points for 19 by halftime.

Dieterich then had a 19-10 third period as six players scored. Westendorf hit a three-pointer and regular basket while Kaden Iffert connected on a three-pointer.

The Maroons continued on with a 13-8 final quarter run to put the game away.

Westendorf led with 22 points on 10 field goals, two of those three-pointers. Gephart added 15 and Landen Keck with 10. The Maroons connected on eight of 10 from the free throw line.

Leading Grayville was Rowland with 25 points.

At Effingham

Mount Zion came calling in an Apollo Conference matchup and handed Effingham a 76-53 loss Thursday evening.

The Braves stepped out to a 26-14 opening quarter lead and led 42-28 at halftime.

Effingham had two players finish in double figures. 

Cannon Bockhorn led the way with 15 points on five field goals, four from three-point range, and one of two at the line. KJ Kellams added 10 points.

The Hearts finished with nine three-pointers in the contest.

:"Against a team that we were down 45 in the third quarter the last time we played, to lose by 23 is some drastic improvement," said EHS Coach Obie Farmer. "Mount Zion is winning by an average margin of 25 plus points so to compete with a team of that caliber is a win for us this year. Our kids played hard and did things well. It's odd to say you are proud of a loss, but I think we got better playing Mount Zion last night. I was impressed by our resolve."

At Olney

Teutopolis fell to Richland County (Olney), 44-39 in Thursday evening action.

Richland County ran out to a 16-6 opening quarter lead and led 22-15 at halftime. 

The  Wooden Shoes came back with a 12-7 third quarter to pull within 29-27 going into the final period. But Richland County regained control as Ian Winkler scored 13 of his team's 15 final quarter points for the victory.

T-town had one player reach double figures. Joey Niebrugge tallied 12 points on six field goals. Garrett Gaddis chipped in with nine and Austin Bloemer seven.

Richland County was led by Winkler with 28 points and Arjay Keller with 10.
