Bulldogs Hand Indians 41-37 Loss In Boys Basketball

Effingham St. Anthony controlled the first half while Altamont took over in the second half, but it wasn't enough for the Indians in a 41-37 high boys basketball loss Tuesday evening.

The Bulldogs held a 10-5 opening quarter lead behind four points each from Brock Fearday and Ryan Schmidt. The lone basket for Altamont came from Alec Jahraus as Kaidyn Miller connected on three of four at the line.

The lead was pushed to 22-14 at halftime as B. Fearday went on a six-point run for St. Anthony while Schmidt added four points.

Kaden Davis hit a three-pointer while K. Miller added four points for the Indians.

Altamont then went on the offense as Davis hit two more three-pointers in the third quarter and Altamont had a 14-9 run. The Indians trailed by only three points heading into the final period The Indians were led by Davis with two more three-pointers and Jahraus put in a behind the arc basket.

Schmidt connected for five points but the Bulldogs hit only four shots in 17 attempts for a mere 23.5 percent shooting.

Altamont took advantage of that by shooting 45.5 percent from the field but only put up 11 shots, hitting five of those.

The Indians took their first lead on a three-pointer by Aden McManaway in the final period. Their second lead was by one point. But St. Anthony came back on a jumper by B. Fearday that put the Bulldogs ahead.

Altamont trailed by three when an open look was long and St. Anthony's Schmidt rebounded. He was fouled and went to the free throw line to put in one and that was the winning margin.

The Class 1A state-leading Bulldogs were led by B. Fearday with 16 points on seven of 19 from the field and two of four at the line. He pulled down nine rebounds. Schmidt chipped in with 14 points on five of nine from the field, one a three-pointer, and three of four at the line. He had seven rebounds. St. Anthony finished regular season play with a 27-4 record and were 8-0 in the National Trail Conference.

Altamont was led by only one player in double figures. McManaway led with 10 on four of eight from the field that included two three-pointers. He pulled down six rebounds. K. Miller led the way on the boards with nine. Milleville led the way in assists with four.

Altamont has an 18-8 record and will finish out regular season play Friday when the Indians host Windsor/Stewardson-Strasburg. The Indians are 6-1 in the conference.

St. Anthony was a 68-58 winner in junior varsity action. The Bulldogs had three players in double figures. Keenan Griffith and Will Fearday led with 14 each while Aiden Lauritzen added 10.

Altamont was led by Brayden Elam with 10 and Tyler Ruffner with nine.
