NTC Teams Do Well at CIC/NTC Shootout, Newton Wins Regular Season Contest

WARRENSBURG -- The CIC/NTC Boys Basketball Shootout was held Saturday at Warrensburg-Latham High School.

In the opening game of the day, North Clay (Louisville) defeated Moweaqua Central A&M, 55-43. 

The Cardinals are 11-16 on the season and will be back in action Tuesday at Red Hill (Bridgeport).

The second contest featured Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City against Sullivan.and had a big second half after trailing throughout the first half, to pull out the victory.

Sullivan edged out to a 20-16 opening quarter lead and pushed that to 32-22 at halftime.

But the Bobcats came back with a 14-4 third quarter run to knot the score at 36-36 going into the final period. CHBC then continued on rolling to a 10-4 final period for the 46-40 victory.

Three players finished in double figures for CHBC. AJ Radloff tallied 13 points while Clayton Wojcik scored 11 and  Gage Lorton 10. Wyatt Rueff added nine points and Kaidyn Calame three. CHBC improved to 13-16 on the seaosn.

Dieterich then captured the third contest of the day over Shelbyville, 56-49.

The Movin' Maroons edged out to a 6-5 opening quarter lead as Lucas Westendorf tallied four of the points. But Shelbyville came back with a 17-16 second period to tie the score at 22-22 at halftime. The Rams moved ahead 37-36 going into the final quarter.

Here came Dieterich's Landen Keck with seven points in the final period 20-12 run to pull out the seven-point win.

Westendorf tallied 19 to lead Dieterich with seven field goals, one a three-pointer, and four of five at the line. Keck finished with 15.

Effingham St. Anthony continued the NTC domination with a 43-30 victory over Nokomis. The Bulldogs broke a 9-9 first quarter tie with a 13-6 run to lead 22-15 at halftime.

St. Anthony continued on as Ryan Schmidt hit five of six free throws in the third quarter 12-5 run and finished with five in the final period.

Schmidt was the lone Bujlldog player in double figures with 17 on four field goals, one a three-pointer, and eight of 10 at the line.

Bloomington Central Catholic then defeated Casey-Westfield, 57-44 in the fifth contest.

In game six, Meridian defeated Neoga, 57-41. 

The Indians are struggling this season, dropping to 5-21.

Game seven was a 63-32 victory for Warrensburg-Latham over St. Elmo/Brownstown.

W-L stepped out to an 18-6 opening quarter lead and led 29-12 at halftime. Warrensburg-Latham dominated the rest of the way.

St. Elmo/Brownstown was led by Cade Schaub with nine points. Adam Atwood added six points and led in rebounding with seven. Josiah Maxey had three assists.

In the final contest of the day, Tuscola tallied a 43-30 victory over Altamont. 

The Indians were led by Aden McManaway with seven points. Kaidyn Miller added six points and led in rebounds with 14.

At Newton

In a regular season contest, Newton was a 67-49 winner over Pana Saturday during Senior Night.

The Eagles held a 35-25 halftime lead and finished with a 22-12 final quarter run.

Caden Nichols led the way in scoring with 20 points on eight field goals, one a three-pointer, and three of six at the line. Parker Wolfe scored 14 and Dylan Gier added 12.

Newton improved to 19-10 on the season and is back in action Tuesday at Casey-Westfield.
