STRASBURG -- Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City edged Windsor/Stewardson-Strasburg in boys basketball action Friday evening, 56-55.

The two teams were knotted at 12-12 in the opening quarter. WSS moved into a 30-24 lead at halftime and led 43-35 going into the final quarter.

The Bobcats came roaring back with a 21-12 final quarter to pull out the one-point victory.

Carson Evans led the winners with 13 points on five field goals that included two three-pointers and one of one at the line while Gage Lorton chipped in with 10 and Clayton Wojcik added nine.

Windsor/Stew-Stras was led by Connor Manhart with 19 points with five field goals, four of those from three-point range and five of six at the line. Jackson Gurgel chipped in with 18.

Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City improved to 3-4 in the National Trail Conference and 12-16 overall.

Windsor/Stew-Stras dropped to 2-5 in the conference and 13-16 overall.

Windsor/Stew-Stras edged  CHBC 26-23 in the junior varsity contest.

The Hatchets are back in action Friday at Altamont.

At Altamont

Altamont took the early lead and went on for a 61-40 victory over St. Elmo/Brownstown Friday evening.

The Indians held a 19-12 opening quarter lead. SEB fought back with a 12-8 second period run to trail 27-24 at halftime.

But Altamont put together a 20-12 third quarter run and finished strong with a 14-4 final period. Kaidyn Miller connected on a basket and was six of seven at the line for eight points in the quarter while Kade Milleville had a three-pointer and a free throw and Aden McManaway two baskets and a free throw.

The Indians had four players in double digits. Miller led the way with 13 on three field goals and seven of eight at the line. McManaway and K. Miller had 12 each and Milleville 11.

St. Elmo/Brownstown had one player in double figures. Adam Atwood led with 11 points on four field goals, two from three-point land, and one of two at the line. Cade Schaub chipped in with nine.

Altamont also nabbed the junior varsity contest, 52-44. Parker Bell led the way with 19 points while Tyler Ruffner had 12 and Zach Meyer 10 for Altamont. SEB was led by Cameron Taylor with 10.

The Indians won the freshman/sophomore contest, 51-35. Johnson led Altamont with 14. SEB was led by Lowe with 11 and Hughett with 10.

At Farina

South Central played host to Mulberry Grove and picked up a 62-40 victory in a non-conference matchup Friday evening.

Jacob Smith got the Cougars off in the right direction, scoring five baskets and a free throw for 11 of his team's opening quarter 20 points. Westin Neilson added five points.

Neilsen took over the scoring duties in the second period with eight points as the Cougars held a 36-16 halftime lead.

Neils continued on with a seven point third quarter and finished with five three-pointers out of nine field goals for 23 points. Also in double figures were Smith with 14 and Kage Hiestand with 12.

Cumberland put together a 22 point opening quarter run and held a 49-17 halftime lead on Decatur LSA Unity Friday evening.

The Pirates finished out with to capture a 70-38 victory.

Kelby Bierman led the way for Cumberland with 10 field goals and one free throw for 21 points. Also in double figures was Isaac Vanetta with 10 points.

Newton High School held a 10 point opening quarter lead and went on to down Richland County, 56-39 Friday evening.

The Eagles held a 45-28 lead going into the final quarter.

Caden Nichols led three players in double figures. Nichols connected on nine field goals, five of those from three-point range and two of two at the line. Parker Wolf chipped in with 15 and Dylan Gier added 14.

Newton is now 18-10 on the season and 5-1 in the Little Illini Conference.
