St. Anthony Wins 7-2A State Championship; St. Michael Finishes 4th in 7-1A Tourney

It took double overtime to get the job done, but the St. Anthony Bullpups won the 7-2A Boys Basketball State Championship Thursday night, defeating Oglesby Washington, 28-25.

Meanwhile, Sigel St. Michael lost to Augusta Southeastern, 49-34, in the third place game of the 7-1A State Tournament.

St. Michael wrapped up their campaign at 23-4.

ST. ANTHONY 28-25 (2OT)

St. Anthony trailed 7-2 after one quarter, but an 8-4 second quarter pulled them within 11-10 by halftime. St. Anthony had taken a 19-17 lead at the end of the third quarter, but were held to one point in the fourth quarter and the score stood at 20-20 at the end of regulation. Neither team scored in the first overtime period, but St. Anthony posted an 8-5 edge in the second extra period to claim the win and the state championship.

Blake Verdeyen led St. Anthony with 13 points. Also for St. Anthony: Charlie Hoene 6, Liam McAllaster 4, Curtis Tingley 3, and Charlie Bierman 2. Other team members are Andrew Wagner, Trenton Sandschafer, James Trupiano, Braydon Baudier,and Sebastian Looman. Jason Ludwig and John Hoene coach the St. Anthony squad.

St. Anthony wrapped up their championship season with a 27-2 record.

AUGUSTA SOUTHEASTERN 49, SIGEL ST. MICHAEL 34

The Sharpshooters trailed just 16-12 after the first quarter and 29-21 at halftime, but a 14-5 Southeastern third quarter put St. Michael down 43-26. An 8-6 edge in the fourth quarter pulled St. Michael a little closer at the end.

Trenton Ballinger led St. Michael with 10 points. Also scoring: Adyn Heuerman 7, Clayton Altgilbers 7, Zach Ordner 4, Eli Walk 2, Walden Andrews 2, and Cole Dasenbrock 2. Other members of the St. Michael are Jackson Krampe, Noah Platz, Kyle Kreke and Elijah Whittier. The Sharpshooters' coaching staff includes Max Niebrugge, Chris Ungrund, Caden Young and Troy Hoene.

St. Michael wraps up their season with a 23-4 record.
