St. Anthony Advances To Title Game, St. Michael To Play For Third, T-town Ends Stay At State

MACON -- Effingham St. Anthony will be playing for the Class 7-2A State Boys Basketball Tournament after claiming two victories Saturday.

In the opener, the Bullpups were 32-12 winners over Green Valley Midwest Central. St. Anthony held Green Valley to only two first hallf points while taking a 17-2 lead.

Blake Verdeyen led St. Anthony with 16 points on six field goals that included one three-pointer and was one of one at the line. Charlie Bierman chipped in with six.

In other games Oglesby Washington defeated Sidell Salt Fork 30-24, Burr Ridge edged Colchester West Prairie, 37-35 and Waverly downed Brimfield 23-22.

St. Anthony then pounded Waverly 40-18 to advance to the championship.

The Bullpups edged out to a 9-6 opening quarter lead and led 20-12 at halftime. St. Anthony then held Waverly scoreless in the third quarter for a 29-12 lead.

Verdeyen led with 22 points on eight field goals, one a three-pointer and was five of seven at the line. Bierman and Liam McAllaster scored six each.

In the other contest, Oglesby Washington edged Burr Ridge, 31-30.

St. Anthony now sports a 26-2 record and will face Oglesby Washington at 7:30 p.m. Thursday for the state championship. Oglesby Washington comes into the contest with a 22-0 record.

The third place game will feature Burr Ridge against Waverly at 6 p.m. Thursday

At East Peoria

Sigel St. Michael won its opener in exciiting fashion over Lexington in the Class 7-1A State Tournament at East Peoria Central Junior HIgh School Saturday.

The Sharpshooters trailed Lexington 8-3 after the opening quarter and 10-8 at halftime.

St. Michael started its comeback in the third quarter and trailed 17-16 going into the final quarter then had a 4-3 final period to tie the scoring sending the game into overtime.

In the overtime period, St. Michael held Lexington scoreless was tallying three points for the victory.

Trenton Ballinger led the way with eight points on three field goals, one a three-pointer and one of one at the line.

In the second game, St. Michael fell to Lincoln West Lincoln-Broadwell, 43-34.

The Sharpshooters fell behind by a 15-7 count in the opening quarter and trailed 23-13 at halftime. St. Michael made a comeback bid with a 10-9 third quarter but couldn't overtime that first quarter run by Lincoln West.

Cole Dasenbrock led the way with 16 points on five field goals, two from three-point land. Ballinger chipped in with 10.

At El Paso

Teutopolis went up against a tough East St. Louis Lincoln team and fell 54-40 in the Class 7-3A State Tournament at El Paso-Gridley High School Saturday.

Lincoln edged ahead 15-10 in the opening quarter then went on a run that put the game away 15-2 in the second period for a 30-12 halftime lead.

Although the Wooden Shoes had a 28-24 second half it was the second period that sealed the deal for Lincoln.

Blake Niemerg led the Shoes with 13 points on six field goals, one a three-pointer. Kale Goeckner added nine points and Sam Probst seven.

The Shoes end the season with a 25-2 record.

In other first round games, Monticello edged Rockford Marshall 41-40, Chillicothe beat Springfield Lincoln 40-30 and Calumet City Schrum won over Lansing Heritage 45-38.

In the second round, East St. Louis Lincoln defeated Monticello 44-23 and Calumet City Schrum beat Chillicothe 70-42.

East St. Louis Lincoln will meet Calumet City Schrum at 7:30 p.m. Thursday for the championship while Monticello takes on Chillicothe at 6 for third place.
