Mattoon Hands EHS Boys Defeat

Mattoon High School conected on eight three-pointers and hit 51.7 percent from the field in taking a 73-51 Apollo Conference victory over Effingham in Thursday evening action.

Bryce Jean got the Green Wave started with seven points in the opening quarter while five other players scored. The lead stood at 19-6 as the Hearts had trouble connecting. EHS went three of 15 from the field for 20 percent.

The Hearts had a much better second quarter as Cannon Bockhorn scored five and Hayden Wendling added a three-pointer but the Green Wave still held a 33-16 halftime lead.

EHS continued to play well in the third quarter but Mattoon moved into a 54-35 lead going into the final quarter. Bockhorn continued on with five more points while Wade Bushur and Rylan Pals also contributed five each.

Mattoon finished with a 19-16 final period. The Green Wave had two players in double figures. Jean led the way with 18 points while Andrew Wetzel added 17. The Green Wave hit 71.4 percent at the free throw line.

The Hearts also had two players in double digits. Bockhorn hit four field goals and was two of two at the line for 12 while KJ Kellams scored all 11 of his points in the second half.

Mattoon improved to 5-2 in the conference, 12-12 overall.

Effingham fell to 1-5 in the conference and now stands at 3-22 overall.
