St. Anthony, Dieterich Advance To Eighth-Grade Regional Title Games

ST. ELMO -- Effingham St. Anthony took the early lead and went on for a 44-26 victory over Stewardson-Strasburg in the Class 8-2A St. Elmo/Brownstown Boys Basketball Regional Wednesday evening.

The Bullpups stepped out to a 10-5 opening quarter lead as Cooper Sehy put in two three-pointers and a regular basket for eight.

Sehy continued on with the exact same score in the second period, hitting two more three-pointers and a regular basket as the Bullpups went into a 23-9 halftime lead.

Stew-Stras fought back in the second half but couldn't overcome that opening half run by St. Anthony.

Sehy finished with 17 points on six field goals, four from three-point range, and one of two at the line.

Stew-Stras was led by Riley Bible with eight points on three field goals, two from trifecta land. Stew-Stras ended the season with a 15-9 record.

In the opening game of the evening, Assumption Central A&M defeated South Central, 49-22.

St. Anthony will meet Assumption Central A&M at 6:30 p.m. today for the regional championship.

Class 8-2A Casey-Westfield Regional

Top-seeded Dieterich tallied a 41-30 victory over North Clay (Louisville) at the Casey-Westfield Regional Wednesday evening.

Dieterich held a 10-2 opening quarter lead behind two baskets by Bryce Bohnhoff and a three-pointer by Ben Schottman.

North Clay's two points were free throws by Lewis and Hemphill.

Dieterich held an 18-10 halftime lead and then pushed ahead 28-18 in the third quarter.

Alex Schottman hit two baskets and a free throw for five points.

The final period was a 13-12 edge by Dieterich. B. Schottman put in three trifectas and a free throw for 10 points.

North Clay's Hemphill had two three-pointers in the quarter.

Dieterich was led by B. Schottman with 19 points on two regular baskets, four three-poimters and three of four at the line. Bohnhoff chipped in with 12.

North Clay was led by Lewis with 15 points on five baskets, two of those three-pointers and three of four at the line.

In the second contest of the evening, Paris Crestwood won over Red Hill (Bridgeport), 45-36.

Dieterich will now face Paris Crestwood at 6 pm.. today for the regional championship.

Class 8-4A Effingham Regional

Effingham saw its hopes of a regional championship go by the wayside with a 57-28 loss to top-seeded Rochester Wednesday evening.

Rochester edged out to a 9-5 opening quarter lead then put on a 15-6 second quarter run to lead 24-11 at halftime.

The Mustangs could muster only three baskets in the opening half as Westin Hayes hit a three-pointer while Jenner Pals and Carson Fox had a basket each. Ian Kinkelaar put in three free throws and Pals one.

Rochester continued on with an 18-6 third quarter. The Mustangs had a slight 17-15 final period run as Kinkelaar hit a basket and a three-pointer while Pals and Lexton Roberts put in a three-pointer each.

Effingham ends the season with a 19-7 record.

Rochester improved to 25-1 and will now head to its own sectional to face either Jacksonville or Chatham Glenwood. Those two teams play tonight for the Chatham Glenwood Regional championship.

Class 8-1A Effingham Sacred Heart Regional

Newton St. Thomas fell in the championship game of the Sacred Heart Regional Wednesday.

Mattoon St. John's was a 47-43 winner over St. Thomas. The top seed now advances to the Pana Sacred Heart Sectional where it will face Pana Sacred Heart, a 48-20 winner over Okaw Valley to win the East St. Lous Younge Regional.
