St. Anthony, St. Michael, Teutopolis Headed To Seventh-Grade State Boys Basketball Tourneys

Effingham St. Anthony, Sigel St. Michael and Teutopolis are headed to the Seventh-Grade State Boys Basketball Tournaments after picking up victories in sectionals Monday evening.

St. Anthony won the Class 7-2A St. Elmo/Brownstown Sectional with a 55-38 victory over Paris Crestwood.

The Bulllpups held a 13-8 opening quarter lead as Blake Verdeyen scored four baskets for eight points while Charlie Hoene put in a three-pointer.

Paris Crestwood came back with a 9-6 second period to pull within 19-17 at halftime.

But the Bullpups roared back after halftime with a 20-5 third quarter. Verdeyen put in six baskets and a free throw for 13 points while Curtis Tingley hit a three-pointer and a regular basket for five.

St. Anthony and Crestwood played even in the final quarter.

Verdeyen finished with 28 points on 13 field goals and two of four at the line. Tingley tallied seven points.

The Bullpups are now 24-2 on the season and will head to the 7-2A State Tournament at Macon Meridian High School Saturday where the Bullpups will face Green Valley Midwest Central with a 23-1 record at 1 p.m.

Class 7-3A Cumberland Sectional

Teutopolis trailed Sullivan after the opening quarter but came back with a strong second period and won the Cumberland Sectional, 28-20 Monday evening.

Sullivan edged out to an 8-6 first period lead. The Wooden Shoes went on a 10-4 second period run to lead 16-12 at halftime. Sullivan had a 6-4 third period to pull within 20-18. But the Shoes put on an 8-2 final quarter run for the winning margin.

Kale Goeckner led T-town with 12 points while Sam Probst added 10.

The Wooden Shoes take a 25-1 record to the Class 73A State Tournament at El Paso/Gridley High School Saturday. They will face East St. Louis Lincoln (16-4) at 11:30 a.m.

Class 7-1A Sigel St. Michael Sectional

Sigel St. Michael captured its own sectional championship Monday evening with a victory over East St. Louis Younge. No score was reported.

The Sharpshooters improved to 22-2 on the season and will head to the Class 7-1A State Tournament at East Peoria Central Junior HIgh School. They will face Lexington with a 16-5 record at 11:30 a.m.
