EHS Beats Mattoon, Dieterich, BSE, WSS, C'land, N. Clay Wins Girls Games

MATTOON -- Effingham High School improved to 21-4 on the season with a 42-36 win over Mattoon in girls basketball action Thursday evening.

The Hearts stepped out to a 15-9 opening quarter lead as Averie Wolfe knocked down two three-pointers and Bella Austin scored five.

EHS held a 21-14 halftime lead. Bria Beals, Saige Althoff and Sidney Donaldson scored a basket each. 

The Green Wave came roaring back in the third quarter with a 14-9 edge to pull within 30-28. Ella Conyers tallied five points while Ava Larson added four.

But the Hearts got back on track with a 12-4 final quarter run. Austin connected on a basket and three from the free throw line while Beals added a three-pointer and a regular basket, both for five points each.

Austin was the lone EHS player in double figures with 10 on three baskets, one a three-pointer, and three of six at the line. Wolfe, Beals and Althoff added seven points each in even scoring.

The Green Wave had three players in double figures. Conyers led with 13 while Larson added 11 and Teygen Sewell 10.

Effingham also claimed the junior varsity contest, 57-25. Mya Harvey scored 10 and Tessa Raddatz nine for the Hearts who improved  to 12-3.

At Farina

Dieterich had four players hit double digits in a 73-65 overtime victory over South Central Thursday evening.

The Cougars held a 13-12 opening quarter lead as Taegan Webster tallied five points. Kady Tegeler led Dieterich with five.

South Central continued on to take a 27-25 halftime lead. Webster added two baskets and three free throw for seven points.

Dieterich remained close as Addison Miller, who hit one three-pointer in the opening quarter, put in two more for six and Miley Britton scored seven points.

The Movin' Maroons then had a 15-9 third quarter run as Ella Kreke scored six points. Dieterich held a 40-36 lead going into the final quarter.

South Central then came back with a 21-17 tally behind the three-point barrage by Kaitlyn Swift. Swift connected on three for nine points while Webster added a three, a regular basket and two free throws for seven and Percilla Reid connected on a three-pointer and the score was knotted at 40-40, sending the contest into overtime.

In the overtime period, Dieterich had a 16-8 run behind Britton's eight points and four points each by Tegeler and Ruby Westendorf.

Britton finished with 22 points for the winners on seven field goals, one a three-pointer, and seven of 12 at the line. Tegeler tallied 13 while Westendorf and Addison MIller added 12 each. Miller hit four three-pointers. 

South Central was led by Webster with 25 on nine field goals, two of those trifectas, and five of six at the line. Also in double figures was Lauren Johnson and Reid with 10 each.

Dieterich also claimed the junior varsity game, 25-15. Madison Hahn led the winners with 10 points. South Central was led by Lorelai Rose with six points.

At Strasburg

Windsor/Stewardson-Strasburg played host to Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City as two National Trail Conference teams met Thursday evening. The Hatchets edged CHBC, 46-44.

WSS took a 14-11 opening quarter lead behind Ella Kinkelaar's 10 points. Haley Doty led CHBC with five points.

The Bobcats then came roaring back with a 12-9 second period to tie the score at 23-23 at halftime. Doty connected with three baskets for seven points and Averie Vaughn added five.

Kinkelaar continued on with five points in the second quarter.

CHBC then had a 14-13 third quarter to lead 37-36 going into the final period. Vaughn scored six more points. Samantha Hayes led the way for WSS with six.

The Hatchets then pulled out the two-point victory with a 10-7 final quarter. Ellie Wittenberg connected on a three-pointer while S. Hayes and Morgan Mathis added a basket each, Clarissa Johnson two free throws and Katelyn VonBehrens one free throw.

Kinkelaar finished with 18 points on five field goals, two of those three-pointers, and six of 10 at the line. S. Hayes added 14. The Hatchets hit 11 of 16 free throws.

CHBC was led by Doty with 18 points on seven field goals and three of five at the line. She connected on one three-pointer for 18. Vaughn added 14 points.

In junior varsity play, Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City edged Windsor/Stewardson-Strasburg, 33-30. CHBC was led by Ruby Stuckemeyer with eight points.

WSS was led by Clarissa Johnson with nine and Claire VonBehrens with seven.

At Ramsey

Borwnstown/St. Elmo stepped out 25-9 opening quarter lead on Ramsey and went on for a 60-26 victory Thursday.

Dayana Haslett went on a run, connecting on four baskets and was four of four at the line for 14 of the team's 25 points. Presley Williams hit four of four at the line and a basket for six points and Lexi Seabaugh connected for five points.

The score calmed down in the second quarter and BSE held a 33-19 halftime lead.

BSE went on a 23-2 third quarter tear as Haslett added seven more points and Madi Miller contributed six.

Haslett finished with 26 points on nine field goals, four of those three-pointers, and four of four at the line. Seabaugh and Williams added 10 each. BSE hit 16 of 22 free throws.

Cumberland claimed a 49-25 victory over Argenta-Oreana in Thursday evening action.

The Pirates took a 15-7 opening quarter lead behind five points each by Paige Dittamore and Jade Carr.

Alyssa Dittamore hit for six points in the second period and Suzy Fritts five as Cumberland held a 29-10 halftime lead.

The Pirates then took a 20-15 second half run for the win.

A. Dittamore connected on six field goals and was three of nine at the line for 15 points. Also in double figures was Katelyn Shoemaker with 12.
