St. Anthony, SEB To Meet In NTC Boys Tourney After Picking Up Wins Wednesday

ALTAMONT -- Effingham St. Anthony and St. Elmo/Brownstown captured victories and will now meet at the 88th Annual National Trail Conference Boys Basketball Tournament Wednesday evening. One of the big events on the evening saw St. Anthony's Brock Fearday and SEB's Adam Atwood reaching 1,000 points in their careers.

The Bulldogs opened the evening with a 76-32 victory over Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City. St. Anthony ran out to a 20-9 opening quarter lead. In that run, B. Fearday knocked down four three-pointers and a regular basket for 14 of his team's 20 points. Fearday hit a bank shot from the right side, his lone two-pointer of the quarter, to reach the 1,000 point plateau.

B. Fearday finished with 17 points on six field goals, four of those three-pointers, and was one of two at the line.

The Bulldogs went into a 46-14 halftime lead. Collin Westendorf took over the scoring reins in the second period with a three-pointer, two regular baskets and a free throw for 10. He finished with 16 points on six field goals, three of those trifectas, and one of one at the line.

Meanwhile, Ryan Schmidt was plugging away. He scored a three-pointer in the opening stanza then connected for six points in the second period and finshed out with eight in the third quarter for 17 in the contest. He hit six field goals, four of those from three-point range, and was one of two at the line.

The Bulldogs tallied 13 three-pointers in the game, hitting 59 percent of their shots. They were 55 percent for the game from the field and 64 percent at the line with nine of 14.

Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City had one player in double digits. Clayton Wojcik scored seven field goals, one from three-point range, and was one of two at the line for 16 points. AJ Radloff was the next in line with eight points.

The Bobcats hit well in the contest, but didn't put up as many shots. CHBC was 50 percent from the field and 67 percent at the free throw line.

St. Elmo/Brownstown put four players in double figures in downing North Clay (Louisville), 73-62.

SEB opened with a 17-8 run. Collin Maxey connected for two three-pointers and a regular basket in the quarter for eight while Josiah Maxey hit a three-pointer and a regular basket for five 

C. Maxey continued on with eight more points in the second quarter for 16 at the half as SEB held a 36-28 lead. The Cardinals had a slight 20-19 lead in the second period as Cody Zimdars knocked in three baskets and was four of four at the line for half of his team's 20 points.

SEB kept close as C. Maxey put in eight more and Cade Schaub scored seven.

Adam Atwood took over the scoring duties in the third quarter with seven points and SEB held a 52-41 lead going into the final period.

In the last quarter, both teams tallied 21 points. Atwood continued on with 10 of those points. The Cardinals had five three-pointers in the final run.

The Eagles were led by Atwood with 23 points on nine field goals, one a three-pointer and four of six at the ilne. He connected on his 1,000 point in that final quarter run.

C. Maxey added 21 points while Schaub finished with 17 and J. Maxey 10.

The Cardinals were led by Zimdars with seven field goals, two from three-point land, and four of six at the line for 20 points. Carter Walden tallied 13, Gavin Hosselton 11 and Ethan Kuenstler 10.

Tonight's games feature Neoga meeting Windsor/Stewardson-Strasburg at 5 p.m. and Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City against North Clay at 6:15 p.m. in consolation bracket play and St. Anthony vs. St. Elmo/Brownstown at 8 for the right to advance to the championship game.
